This fall, CRDF Global welcomed law enforcement, justice, and immigration professionals from across Africa for the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) regional project "Dismantling International Criminal Networks II." The participants have met with U.S. counterparts to gain an understanding of the criminal justice system and framework at the national, state, and local level for combatting transnational crimes. Through these exchanges, participants also helped identify opportunities for American policymakers and law enforcement agencies to collaborate more effectively with African partners in countering transnational crime and advancing shared security objectives.

In Washington, D.C., participants explored U.S. approaches to international law enforcement cooperation and strategies for addressing transnational criminal threats through meetings with the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of State and a visit to the Supreme Court.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, IVLP participants engaged with public safety and criminal justice professionals at the U.S. Attorney's Office & Eastern District of North Carolina's Illicit Financial Taskforce, as well as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the North Carolina Human Trafficking Commission, and cybersecurity-focused units to discuss investigative practices and local approaches to strengthening security at the state level.

During their next stop in Kansas City, Missouri, the group met with police, prosecutors, corrections officials, airport security personnel, forensic specialists, and drug trafficking task forces to examine human trafficking interdiction, organized crime investigations, digital forensics, and interagency coordination.

By sharing experiences and building professional networks, participants strengthened the partnerships and knowledge exchange needed to address security challenges that transcend borders.

After their first stops in Washington, DC and New York, Japanese cybersecurity professionals participating in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on U.S.-Japan cybersecurity collaboration continued to Louisiana and Colorado to explore AI integration, infrastructure resilience, cyber workforce development, and data protection.

Through meetings with universities, government agencies, cybersecurity firms, military educators, and technology centers, the group examined practical approaches to critical-infrastructure security, threat intelligence, responsible AI, secure innovation, and preparing the next generation of cyber professionals.

We wish to thank the representatives at Ampirical, the LSU Cybersecurity Clinic (LCC), the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, and the LSU New Orleans Cyber Center (UNOCC) for your insights on cyber resilience, applied innovation, and development of the future technology workforce. We also thank the U.S. Air Force Academy Computer and Cyber Sciences / Madera Cyber Innovation Center, Pikes Peak State College, the Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Space ISAC), Joint Task Force-Space Defense Commercial Operation Cell (JCO), IronCore Labs, Kyndryl, and Rule4 for the meaningful discussions on cybersecurity challenges and innovative solutions that are shaping cross-sector intelligence and possibilities. It was fitting for the group to conclude its tour by visiting RaptorTECH at Silver Creek High School and the Innovation Center (IC) at the St. Vrain Valley School District, for a glimpse of preparation for the future: the dynamic, hands-on learning opportunities that enrich the technology leadership pipeline.

To the teams at Global New Orleans, the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council, and the Boulder Council of International Visitors: thank you for creating incredible opportunities for exchanging best practices and reinforcing a shared commitment for enhancing cybersecurity collaboration between the U.S. and Japan.

As artificial intelligence rapidly changes how news is gathered, verified, produced, and shared, journalists around the world are navigating both new opportunities and new responsibilities. CRDF Global recently hosted 14 journalists as part of an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) project focused on how emerging technologies and AI tools are shaping journalism, specifically with regard to their impact on media accuracy, efficiency, audience engagement, free expression, and responsible technology use.

The tour began in Washington, DC, where the group visited the Washington Foreign Press Center to explore governance of the digital public sphere and discuss the responsibilities of journalists working at the intersection of technology and global influence. While in DC, participants also met with representatives of the Theia Institute to discuss strategies for advancing responsible technology adoption.

For the second stop, which focused on journalism, ethics, and the public interest, the group split, with one cohort traveling to Milwaukee, WI, and the other to Pittsburgh, PA. The Milwaukee cohort visited broadcast station WITI FOX6 Milwaukee and later appeared on news segment (https://hubs.ly/Q04wnjYW0). The Pittsburgh cohort focused on constitutional protections in journalism, meeting with Michael Luca at the Pittsburgh Media Partnership and Carnegie Mellon University Block Center for Technology and Society to discuss AI-related public engagement through events, forums, and research.

Reuniting in San Francisco, the full group met with Tuan Nguyen, chair of the AI Department at Laney College and founding leader of the Bay Area AI Center of Excellence (BAAICOE), to discuss workforce development and AI education partnerships. Participants also examined the use of AI tools to support investigative journalism in a discussion with Stanford University professor Monica Lam and met DataTalk, a chatbot designed to help investigative journalists and newsrooms work more efficiently without sacrificing factual accuracy.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the cybersecurity landscape, international collaboration is more important than ever. Facilitating that collaboration was the goal of the Enhancing U.S.-Japan Cybersecurity Collaboration through AI Integration International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), which kicked off last week.

Throughout the program, Japanese cybersecurity professionals will meet with institutions in Washington, DC; Albany, New York; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Colorado Springs and Boulder, Colorado to explore how AI governance, innovation, and cyber resilience intersect and to deepen U.S.-Japan collaboration around responsible AI integration and the shared goal of building a safer, more secure digital future.

While in Washington, DC, the group met with representatives of the Cyber Defense Assistance Collaborative (CDAC), a group of cybersecurity companies, former U.S. government officials, and U.S. cyber defense leaders that successfully met cyber defense aid requests from Ukrainian government ministries and organizations. CDAC has become a model for global cyber defense coordination, offering the team a practical, timely example of how public-private partnerships can strengthen cyber resilience.

A meeting with Cloudflare offered participants a forum to compare industry-leading cybersecurity services that protect organizations and critical digital infrastructure from cyber threats. The group also met with Josh Magri, CEO of the Cyber Risk Institute, who shared his insights about how cybersecurity policy and AI risk management is operationalized within the U.S.

During a meeting at the Theia Institute, a think tank focused on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and technology governance, the group discussed AI governance and innovation, including American approaches to integrating AI into cybersecurity policy and operations and strategies for detecting, deterring, and responding to emerging cyber threats.

We're ending the week on a bittersweet note: our summer interns have wrapped up their final presentation and are heading back to their respective campuses! Each took on AI-focused projects within various departments of CRDF Global and blew us away with what they were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time.

Harry, who supported the Growth department from our Arlington office, collaborated with teams across the organization to build automation, analytics, and knowledge management solutions that improved operational efficiency and data accessibility. "I was excited to share the impact of these projects alongside an incredibly talented cohort of fellow interns," he said.

Hamza supported the Finance and Business Operations team based in Amman. "During my internship at CRDF Global, I developed data and AI solutions that streamline business processes, centralize knowledge, and improve access to information. These projects demonstrated how automation and analytics can help teams work more efficiently and make better decisions."

Raj, who supported the Threat Reduction department, commented that "it was wonderful working with such an amazing team throughout the summer. I learned so much, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute in ways that helped support the team's work. The experience reinforced my passion for using technology to make a meaningful difference."
