Recognizing and Connecting Territories to Build Peace” 🌎✨

Our In-Country Manager in Colombia, Luz Angela Guzman, had the opportunity to lead an interactive session with 6th grade students at Gimnasio Femenino School in Bogotá, Colombia focused on peacebuilding, empathy, intercultural exchange, and global citizenship.

Through movement activities, reflection, videos, and dialogue, students explored what territory and belonging means, how conflict and landmines impact communities, and how young people around the world can still be deeply connected despite living in very different realities.

One of the most meaningful moments was reflecting on the experiences of children living in territories affected by conflict and recognizing that peace starts in the places where we live, and in the actions we take every day. 💛

Students also reflected on possible initiatives they could implement to help others and support safer, more inclusive communities. They will continue discussing ideas and exploring ways they can take action, and more information will be shared soon.

Honoring Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. MLI works with courageous military personnel across the globe who risk their lives every day as they work to rid their homes of landmines. Thank you for your service!

May 15 is the UN’s International Day of Families! This day of observance was started with the intent of raising awareness of how important the family unit is in supporting children in development. MLI believes in supporting families across the globe recovering from the impact of landmines in their communities, and in defending everyone’s right to live in a world free from the fear of landmines.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our MLI family for all of their support over the years, and without whom this wouldn’t be possible— thank you!

MLI was honored to host Mr. Samir Avdić, Mayor of Sarajevo, and Mr. Denis Kovacevic, Associate from the International Cooperation Department for a special visit at the MLI office! We had a meaningful conversation reflecting on our long-standing cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina—from the Mine Free Sarajevo project to the CHAMPS Bosnia program, to the previous work of our very own canine ambassador MDD Rico in detecting landmines in BiH.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to continue strengthening these connections while the delegation was in town for the Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Maryland and look forward to continuing our partnership 🤝

MLI staff and K9 Ambassador Rico travelled to Connecticut in late March/early April to raise awareness for the heroic work of mine detection dogs. The team provided 6 presentations to more than 400 people, and Rico provided 6 live sniffing demonstrations— swipe to check out where they went!

From the field to the classroom, Rico’s impact continues. 🐾

After serving as a mine detection dog in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Rico retired in 2022 and began a new mission as MLI’s K9 Ambassador. Since then, he has visited over 80 schools in the US and presented to over 15,000 people, sharing the life-saving role of mine detection dogs and raising awareness about landmines.

From demonstrations and community events to meeting global leaders, Rico continues to inspire the next generation and represent the impact of humanitarian demining around the world.
