BREAKING NEWS: 45 million acres of public land are officially at risk of harmful development.

The Department of Agriculture will publish its Notice of Intent to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule this Friday, August 29, moving to strip protections from 45 million acres of public lands. The move follows the agency’s announcement earlier this year and will trigger a 21-day public comment period.

“For nearly 25 years, the Roadless Rule has safeguarded America’s backcountry—lands that are home to 70 percent of our native trout and salmon, that protect drinking water for millions, and that offer some of the finest hunting and fishing opportunity in the world,” said Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited.

“We would, honestly, welcome a transparent, collaborative process to determine if tweaks to the rule would allow us to better protect the values of roadless areas while also better protecting communities of people at risk of catastrophic fire. Rather than rescinding the Roadless Rule and allowing that chaos to unfold, we encourage the Forest Service to work with stakeholders to develop solutions that continue to protect roadless areas and intact fish and wildlife habitat.”

BREAKING NEWS‼️

After a hard fought battle and tens of thousands of TU members and supporters raising their voices, public land sales are OUT of the budget reconciliation package.

“Americans’ love of public lands is the most nonpartisan issue in the country. Public lands are the cornerstone of our conservation legacy, uniting us with the last best places this country has to offer. We thank the members of Congress who have joined hundreds of thousands of outdoorsmen and women in opposing widespread public land selloffs in reconciliation,” said Chris Wood, CEO and President of Trout Unlimited.

“This is certainly not the first attempt to privatize or transfer our public lands, and it won’t be the last—we must stay vigilant and defend the places we love to fish, hike, hunt, and explore.”

Thank you to each and every one of you who sent an email, made a phone call, and mobilized your friends and community members to stand up for public lands.
