Today marks a milestone for surviving military families.

The Take Care of America’s Veterans Act — a historic package combining more than 60 bipartisan bills — was formally introduced in Congress. It includes some of the most important provisions TAPS has been advocating for on behalf of military surviving families for years.

We are grateful to Chairman Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Chairman Mike Bost (R-Ill.) for sponsoring this bill.

Grief doesn’t take the summer off.

The trips you always planned together. The playlists you still can’t skip through. The empty seat you can’t stop looking at. Summer has a way of making the absence louder than ever.

If this season has been harder than you expected, you are not alone. Drop what has caught you off guard this summer in the comments. We are always here to listen.

June 6, 1944.

More than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the shores of Normandy. Over 4,400 were killed that day.

82 years later, we honor every one of them, and the families who have carried their memory ever since.

Carrying their memory isn’t about being strong for everyone else. It’s about finding a way to carry their love into the life you are still building.

The truth is, we don’t move on from the people we love—we move forward with them. Legacy isn’t just a concept; it is something lived out every single day in the choices we make.
“I’ll be your legacy. You live on in me. So I’ve made the choice to honor your life by living again.”

Choosing to live fully after a devastating loss is one of the hardest things a survivor can do. It doesn’t mean forgetting, and it doesn’t mean the pain is gone. It means choosing to let their love, their values, and their impact guide your next steps.

If you are navigating grief today, know that you are not carrying this weight, or their memory, alone. There is a whole community walking this path with you, honoring life, loss, and everything in between.

“Connection.”
“Community.”
“Rejuvenating.”
“Emotional.”

Every Memorial Day weekend, thousands of mothers, fathers, children, siblings, battle buddies, and best friends gather to honor a loved one who served and died. Together, they celebrate their heroes’ lives and share their grief journey with others who truly understand. Hear the words survivors used to describe the impactful weekend they had at the TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp.

When someone dies, you don’t just lose them.

You lose the future you planned with them. The first call you can never make again. The version of yourself that only existed with them. The smaller moments you’d give anything to have back.

Grief is never just one loss, it is many, felt over and over again.

What’s something small (or big) that you miss since your loved one’s death? Share with us below. We’re here to listen.

Over Memorial Day weekend, TAPS families stood courageously before more than 600,000 poppies on the National Mall in Washington, DC — each poppy representing a military life lost in service to our country since World War I. We are grateful to USAA for the opportunity to bring our surviving families to their Poppy Wall of Honor for this profound experience of honor and remembrance together.

For those who visited, seeing their loved one's service and sacrifice represented within the scope of history, and this immense memorial was both heartbreaking and meaningful. Each poppy is not just a symbol; it represents an individual who served and died, and a family forever changed. Together, they form the fabric of who we are as a nation.

Thank you, USAA, for creating this special space for reflection, education, and honor.

Grief can make you feel like you’re losing parts of yourself.
The version of you that used to laugh easily.
The version that could focus.
The version that didn’t carry this kind of heaviness everywhere.

Some days, it feels like everyone else is living normally while you’re just trying to survive the weight of missing someone who should still be here.

But grief is not proof that you’re broken.
It’s what happens when someone you love becomes a memory instead of a person you can call, hug, or come home to.

It hurts because they mattered.
It hurts because the love is still here.
