On Day 3 of , TIFA Project joined the JSI-sponsored satellite session, "From Insights to Action: Bolstering National TB Programs and Results Through Improved Data and Information Systems," to explore how innovative data solutions are transforming TB care globally.

Chaired by our own Senior Technical Advisor Sabrina Eagan and USAID - US Agency for International Development Indonesia’s Anastasia Susanto, the session highlighted approaches from , Indonesia, and :

➡️ Pakistan: Dr. Syed Hussain Hadi presented on the TB OUTREACH and TB Hospital DOTS Linkages applications, which support household screenings, monitoring, and patient transfers.

➡️ Indonesia: Anis Hariri shared an interoperability solution that reduces data entry burdens for the National TB Program.

➡️ Zimbabwe: Dr. Eltony Mugomeri of Africa University highlighted the Making Sense of TB Data (MSTB Data) program, which focuses on training, data quality assurance, and field-level data reviews.

JSI’s Nikki Davis also shared insights from TB DIAH’s Data-to-Action Continuum (D2AC) assessment, emphasizing the importance of data-driven decision-making.

The session ended with a dynamic panel discussion featuring in-person and online questions reinforcing the shared commitment to adaptable, data-focused strategies in TB care. The insights gained inspire us to continue developing solutions that align with global health innovations while addressing the unique needs of local communities and advancing TB care and management—with the ultimate goal of ending TB.

On the second day of , Jafor Saleh, TIFA Project’s program lead for Bangladesh, spoke on the critical role of leadership and collaboration in delivering high-quality TB care. Reflecting on Bangladesh’s journey to strengthen TB services, Jafor highlighted the impact of the National TB Program’s leadership in building provider skills and institutionalizing TB training.

With support from TIFA, Bangladesh’s National Tuberculosis Control Program established an Education and Training Unit and launched a standardized TB training curriculum to bridge gaps in healthcare provider education. Now, with a new Training Management Information System, training resources are easily accessible to policymakers and health leaders—enhancing coordination and the effectiveness of TB services.

As Jafor noted, “Building relationships takes time, but if we take time to connect and collaborate… we will see more and significant progress.”

Did you know?

📈 Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious disease killer, surpassing COVID-19.
🫁 In 2023, 1.25 million people died from TB, including 161,000 people with HIV.
💊 Despite global efforts, drug-resistant TB persists as a public health crisis, with only 2 in 5 accessing needed treatment.

🌍📢 The World Health Organization’s 2024 Global TB Report is here! The findings reinforce the urgent need for initiatives that advance TB elimination efforts.

By funding local initiatives and partnering with national TB programs, TIFA Project supports work that strengthens TB screening, diagnosis, and treatment, which is essential to bridging these gaps.

A key success story took center stage at today’s third quarterly review meeting in Busia, Uganda, where officials from the Ugandan and Kenyan national TB programs gathered to share progress on work funded through TIFA Project grants. Emmanuel Tweyongyere, cross-border TB coordinator for Uganda’s National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program, highlighted the designation of a border point of entry (POE) as a TB drug refill center now serving 37 patients. This initiative was implemented after a multi-drug resistant TB patient, a truck driver, reported difficulty adhering to treatment due to the distant location of health facilities. In response, the district established the POE as a more accessible drug refill center, improving treatment adherence.

With funding from various TIFA grants, stakeholders in and are collaborating to strengthen cross-border TB prevention, improve treatment adherence, and enhance disease surveillance. Organized by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the two-day event brings together TB professionals, government officials, USAID - US Agency for International Development, and TIFA staff to discuss work aimed at improving cross-border TB prevention and control between Kenya and Uganda.

Quarterly meeting participants emphasized that such cross-border coordination is crucial for global health security and is improving TB outcomes in the region.

Zimbabwe’s health workforce is facing high staff attrition, particularly in specialized healthcare, while simultaneously managing the burden of multidrug-resistant TB and TB/HIV co-infections. To address this, the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care, in partnership with Africa University, is implementing the ECHO model with grant funding from the TIFA Project(TIFA). The ECHO model uses tele-mentoring and virtual learning to connect rural healthcare providers with specialists, enhancing hashtag care across the country. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eyQASiBv

Don’t miss the 127th ECHO session, which will focus on the role of contact investigation as it relates to addressing TB transmission.

Read out our latest story from India! The Leveraging, Engaging, and Advocating to Disrupt Tuberculosis Transmission (LEAD) project, funded by the TIFA Project and implemented by HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE INDIA (HPPI), is advancing efforts to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) among urban migrants and people experiencing homelessness by mapping high-risk areas, training community health workers, and conducting active case-finding. HPPI screened nearly half a million people in just eight months and identified over 2,400 TB cases. Our story also highlights Rohit's journey from patient to TB educator.

Last week, the Center for Communication Programs conducted a training of trainers (TOT) for 16 participants who will train medical doctors across the country on the knowledge and skills needed to combat tuberculosis (TB).

The Bangladesh National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP), in consultation with NTP stakeholders and funded by a TIFA Project commitment grant, developed the instructional materials. The package includes a curriculum, facilitator’s handbook, participant’s handbook, and tools for training monitoring and follow-up.

From May 26-30, 2024, TOT participants gained practical experience in training facilitation tools and techniques. This TOT and the package of TB instructional materials, praised by participants as among the most comprehensive they've encountered, represent a significant step towards strengthening TB capacity in Bangladesh.

Last month, the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia hosted a training session for radiographers on the use of a portable digital X-ray machine embedded with AI, funded by a TB Implementation Framework Agreement TB commitment grant. Eight radiology staff from various facilities in Mushindamo District, Luano District, Mansa District, and a first-level hospital in Mpika participated in the training, held in collaboration with Qure.ai and Fujifilm.

The portable X-ray machines embedded with AI, specifically qXR, can read and triage chest X-rays, reducing the risk of late, under, or misdiagnoses and ensuring better patient care. Used as a point-of-care screening tool followed by bacteriological confirmation, qXR is designed to augment human expertise with AI's power, detecting and localizing multiple abnormalities in chest X-rays. The use of these advanced technologies in TB screening is significant as it enhances early detection and treatment, critical in the fight against tuberculosis.
