As food insecurity continues to rise in Arlington, more people are turning to food pantries and longstanding AFAC members are visiting more often. Now, for the first time, AFAC is proud to present the Member Spotlight. This annual report highlights the demographics of Arlingtonians served in FY26, the accessibility of AFAC's free grocery programs, and the level of need for food assistance in Arlington.

While AFAC has recorded and analyzed member data for more than thirty years, this is the first time that it has been made publicly available. Visit the link in our bio to read the full 2026 Member Spotlight report.

We’re so grateful to have Kira with us for eight weeks as she pursues her graduate degree in nutrition and dietetics! 🥕🍎

During her time at AFAC, Kira is creating resources on important health topics, visiting our senior sites to talk about the connection between food and health, and preparing healthy, delicious snacks using ingredients available at AFAC.

In this demonstration, she created banana and peanut butter "sushi", bean salad, and protein bites!👩‍🍳🍴

Thank you to Arlington Cultural Affairs for inviting AFAC to be part of its Free Movie Nights celebrating Hunger Action Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.📽️🎞️

At sunset, community members gathered to learn about food insecurity in Arlington before watching In the Heights, projected onto the side of AFAC’s warehouse. A great evening bringing together food access, culture, and community.

It's official: September is Hunger Action Month! Last week, the Arlington County Board issued a proclamation urging all community members to raise awareness of food insecurity, support local food assistance efforts, volunteer in their neighborhood, and help advance a community where everyone has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.

Our Personal Shopper program would love to expand but we need substitute volunteers. You would need to be available most Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30. You would come to AFAC, wait in line with our members, and shop for 1-2 families. You will receive delivery instructions and a shopping list when you arrive. You would then deliver the groceries to the families. The families assigned to you will live near one another. We anticipate you spending approximately 45 minutes at AFAC and another 45 minutes delivering.

You must be 18 or older, have a vehicle, and be able to carry 2-3 grocery bags from a parking lot into an apartment building, up a flight or two of stairs, etc. You would also need to be available at least one Tuesday a month.

The Nelson Street distribution site will be CLOSED TODAY, Friday, September 4 due to a power outage. We are actively recruiting a FRIDAY volunteer driver to help with our home delivery program! You would arrive at AFAC between 10:00 and 11:00 am to pick up pre-packed groceries for approximately 5 clients who live in the same general vicinity. We estimate deliveries take an hour once you leave AFAC. You must be at least 18 years old, reliable, and friendly. You also need to be strong enough to carry about 40 pounds, able to walk some distance, including flights of stairs, have a car that can hold approximately 8 milk crates, and be comfortable driving around Arlington. We expect this to be a regular commitment after a brief trial period, but of course, we understand that you may take a week or two off periodically.

AFAC is growing and our mission is evolving with us.

Since our mission, vision, and core beliefs were last updated in 2011, the need in our community has more than doubled. This past year, we served 4,000+ families every week, with 1 in 10 Arlington residents coming to our doors.

This update reflects us, our community today, and will guide our work for years to come.💚
