“Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 911”. - Barack Obama

Today we take time to acknowledge everyone touched by the tragedy that occurred on September 11th, 2001. As time moves forward, it is important that we commemorate the collective courage and resilience shown in the face of devastation. ❤️

During day 2 of our trip, we focused on archiving various artifacts detailing the histories of the Dark Branch community. We were graciously granted access to personal archives of newspapers, family photos, books, and so much more. From this material, we were able to gain tremendous insights into the community. Additionally, we took a tour of Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson. From 1171 to 1175, more than 302 enslaved people were imported through Port Brunswick. Fort Anderson, built on top of the port, served as a part of the Cape Fear River Defenses for the Confederacy.

Yesterday was day one of our trip to Brunswick NC to connect and learn from the historic Dark Branch community. Day 1 began our oral history interviews with pillars of the community at the Kendall Chapel AME Church and cemetery restoration of the Dark Branch Cemetery. Students and faculty from George Mason University, Morgan State University, and Prairie A&M University are collaborating diligently to capture and restore the overlooked stories, experiences, and lifeways of Dark Branch.
