History comes alive when you can walk through it.

On Monday, our interns, Andrea and Zachary, stepped outside the classroom and into America’s founding story with visits to Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.

From the first permanent English settlement to the institutions and ideas that shaped a nation, they explored the people, challenges, and decisions that helped define the American experience.

Understanding politics starts with understanding history—and there’s no substitute for seeing it firsthand.

Later this week, these interns will take the next step in their leadership journey as they join us for their first Campaign Leadership College, where they’ll learn the fundamentals of political campaigns, communications, voter outreach, and grassroots organizing.

What does it take to represent the United States abroad?

A few weeks ago, ASOP's summer 2026 interns, Andrea and Zachary, spent two days exploring that question at the Foreign Service Opportunity School.

Through conversations with current and former Foreign Service Officers, ambassadors, and policy experts, our interns gained a firsthand look at diplomacy, embassy operations, foreign policy, and the realities of serving overseas. They also completed a Foreign Service Officer practice exam and learned more about the pathways available to those interested in public service.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was the opportunity to hear directly from professionals who have spent their careers advancing American interests around the world.

Experiences like these help our interns better understand the institutions, challenges, and opportunities that shape public policy beyond Washington.

Campaigns are ultimately about leadership — and learning from leaders who have governed through real political challenges.

During the International School of Politics's recent program series in Australia, Director of the Advanced School of Politics, Rick Tyler, met with former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to discuss political communication, campaign strategy, leadership, and the changing dynamics of center-right politics.

Conversations like these are a reminder that while campaigns evolve, the fundamentals of persuasion, clarity, and leadership remain constant.

You’ve been taught to think before you speak.

But if you want to run for office, you also need to think before you tweet, text, post, or hit send.

Every message shapes your reputation. Every decision contributes to the resume you’re building long before you become a candidate.
