What does stability look like for a young person?

Sometimes, it’s knowing that when the school day ends, someone will be there.

Mario Bailey, Emergency Shelter Supervisor at Shelter Youth & Family Services, has spent decades working with young people. In our recent conversation, he talked about something fundamental: making sure youth know they are safe, cared for, and supported.

Have you ever thought about opening your home to a child in need, but didn’t know where to start?

Learn about becoming an Emergency Foster parent with Shelter Youth & Family Services and our partner Let It Be Us on August 27 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at Moretti's Ristorante and Pizzeria in Bedford Park (in person or virtually).

Emergency foster parents provide short-term care, safety, and stability for children during times of crisis. Extensive support is provided to foster families throughout the process.

We especially encourage bilingual Spanish-speaking families, educators, healthcare professionals, first responders, and individuals with parenting or special needs experience to attend.

Show me a teenager excited about going back to school. Seriously.

For many of the youth living in our Emergency Shelters, going back to school means more than classes and homework.

It means seeing friends. Joining a club. Going to a football game. Having somewhere to be every morning — and a familiar routine to return to every afternoon.
