This has been a hard post to write and that is why it has taken forever. As you may have noticed, The F.A.B. 5k is not on your race calendar this year. After 5 very successful years of the race, we have decided to take a step back from our race planning. We have been trying to find the way to say good-bye and thank you.
Our race started out as 4 women trying to wrap our brains around this disease and how it has affected our lives and others. We were amazed every year as to how our little 5k evolved into a community event. We met many wonderful and inspirational people along the way. We said good-bye to women who were our inspirations (and continue to be). Our race was more than just 3.1 miles, it was a way to celebrate, mourn and mostly importantly support the families in our community struggling with breast cancer in their lives.
Thanking you for your unwavering support does not seem like enough. Imagine those days when you need a hug, some understanding, or some unconditional love and then imagine it came to you in a group hug of over 800 people. Every year when we started our race planning we swore it was the last time and every year we walked away from the race feeling that our efforts along with all of our wonderful volunteers was worth it and we should do it again. Believe it or not hours after the race this year, even though our resolve was 5 years and over $100,000 raised for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was a good note to end on, we still said, “Maybe??”
Just because our race is no longer on the calendar does not mean our loyal participants should stop spreading their inspiration. Many events in our community support breast cancer research and education. Find one this year and put it on your race calendar. Wear your F.A.B. 5k t-shirt around town to remind people that the cause never ends until we find a cure. Donate to a friend walking in the AVON 39 this weekend.
Keep the spirit of the F.A.B. 5k going, just as you helped us keep the spirit of our inspirations, Charmaine Glass, Barb Pleva, Noreen Armstrong and of course Sara Lopez with us.
