Today, on Memorial Day, we pause not only to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, but also to reflect on the freedoms their sacrifice secured for all of us. Their courage, devotion, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As our community gathered this weekend for the Town of Rome Military Honor Walk Banner Celebration, we were reminded that honoring our veterans is not just a ceremony โ€” it is a commitment to remember their stories, recognize their service, and support the families who stood beside them.

To everyone who attended, volunteered, shared memories, or paused to walk among these tributes โ€” thank you. Your participation helped create something truly meaningful for our community and for the families of those we honor.

Today especially, we remember those who never made it home. May we carry their legacy forward with gratitude, respect, and unity.

We also hold close in our hearts the veterans who returned home carrying the lasting wounds of war โ€” those who later lost battles connected to their service, whether seen or unseen. Their sacrifices, too, are part of the enduring cost of freedom, and they will always be remembered with honor and gratitude.

So many gave their tomorrows so that we could have today.

Freedom Is Never Free.

The American Legion Ryan Larson Post #65 Honor Guard were present for a rifle volley, and flag ceremony. Each veteran received a booklet with pictures of fellow veterans and a small flag for their branch of service. A hotdog lunch was served by Visit Rome.

Over the past few weeks, Iโ€™ve had the honor of sharing the stories and photos of 31 military members connected to our community.

Thank you to the families, friends, and community members who helped share these stories and memories. I invite you to take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor these individuals. Be sure to turn your volume up to hear the musical backdrop.
