The Sawyer Camillo Memorial Fund

The Sawyer Camillo Memorial Fund This is a Memorial Fund that arose from an annual Memorial Volleyball tournament played in memory of Sawyer Camillo was a small town, Argyle-girl.

She knew everyone, and they knew her from her quick smile and funny, engaging personality. After an illustrious high school volleyball career, including being named All-State, she was recruited to the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. Even as a red-shirted freshman, she became a beloved member of the Ragin’ Cajuns volleyball team (in true Sawyer fashion). In December of that same year, Sawyer

underwent surgery to remedy a back injury and get her back on the court. Four days later, she suffered a massive blood clot that suddenly ended her life. As a way of showing their love for Sawyer, the Argyle School District and Coach Clark Oberle renamed their annual volleyball tournament The Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Tournament, which is now approaching its third year. This year’s tournament will be held at the Argyle High School on Thursday, August 27th and Saturday, August 29th, 2015. In prior years, this tournament has funded a new net, personalized with the name “Argyle Lady Eagles” and the team’s logo, to express the community’s pride in their team. Building on this success, the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Fund would like to build a sand volleyball court at Argyle High School to be used by the students and the community that Sawyer loved so much. Argyle is a small community that revolves around its students, their activities and family. There are no public parks at this time, and therefore the school campuses serve as the meeting and playground areas. In order to help facilitate this project, the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Fund became a 501c3 in mid-October of last year. Our mission is to promote and give back to the school, community and organizations that were meaningful to Sawyer. It was these groups that enriched her life and helped to mold her into the person she grew to be.

To the parents, players, and coaches of Argyle High School Volleyball, this letter is long overdue. It has been a crazy three weeks since the 2025 Sawyer Camillo Memorial Tournament/Showcase. For Don and me, this tournament is usually followed by the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Tournament in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was a whirlwind tournament that was memorable because we both came home with Covid!!! Oh, for joy! Enough with my excuses for being so slow to get this to you all. The Sawyer Tournament was a great success. I had many guests and players tell me it was a fun and good experience for them, and the thanks for that goes to all of you who worked so hard to get donations, set up, take down, and work this event. This year was special for Don and me as both our sons and their families/special loved ones were able to be with us. For my one son, it was his first time to see Argyle’s new high school. I know it pleased them to see the way Argyle continues to honor and remember their little sister Sawyer. Thank you all for all that you did to make that possible. I have included some of the photos I took during this event and some special photos of our long-time history with Erin Newsom Baker, her family, and Hannah. They knew Sawyer as a friend and neighbor. It is hard to believe Hannah is a senior this year and the last Argyle student that I know of who actually knew Sawyer. The Argyle Lady Eagles are doing what they always do—make us proud! Best of success to all teams this season. Thank you for being a team Sawyer would have been so proud of, playing the game she loved so much.
