Three AHS art students submitted a dress for Junk Kouture’s sustainable global art competition, Vivacious Viscountess. Vivacious Viscountess is made with various fabrics from placemats, and the main green fabric with the floral pattern is from a tablecloth. Every material we used came from thrift stores, along with bottles from recycling bins. The main SDG we targeted was SDG13, or climate action. Our use of materials was made to incorporate items that otherwise would have been discarded and wasted. Using the theme of climate change, we decided to add botanical aspects such as the flowers and swirls, to represent a tree. There are placements acting as netting, and plastic is added at the bottom and gradually fading as it reaches the top. These plastic pieces and netting show that despite the beauty, we impact the environment around us with objects and processes a part of our daily lives. We used various techniques in our design, such as sewing, weaving, painting, glueing, and the creation of flowers from fabric and plastic. This dress is meant to stand for the state of our environment, and to show that the time to take action is now or never.
