Our dear friend and fellow Rotarian left us last week to join his beloved wife who passed last year. Tom Barkei was an inspiration to everyone he encountered and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those in need. He will be sorely missed by each of us whose life he touched through guidance, assistance, mentorship, and friendship. It is hard to envision a life without Tom, but we will take the lessons learned by his example and do our best to make him proud.

Thomas Joseph Barkei (Tom) joined his beloved wife, Cindy, in heaven on July 14, 2024. Tom was born in Aurora, IL on March 14th, 1937 to Joseph and Barbara (Dieter) Barkei. We are so grateful for our “Bread Man,” Tom, and his Wednesday morning bread deliveries! His early morning routine of giving back to the Western North Carolina community inspires us. With the support of the Rotary Club of Arden, Tom brings us delicious, fresh bread to pass along to our food pantry recipients.
