One hundred and twenty-eight years ago today, June 17, 1898, the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps was established. Since then, the Sailors known as Corpsmen have carried wounded Service members out of danger, held the line in field hospitals, and answered the call of "Doc" without hesitation. Many of the Veterans we're honored to serve wore that title, or owe their lives to someone who did. That bond doesn't end at discharge. It shows up in the way they look out for one another, in the quiet way they keep showing up for their brothers and sisters in arms.

To every Corpsman, past and present: your care saved lives then, and your example still inspires the Veteran community we serve every day. Happy 128th birthday to the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps.

We are growing our NCServes Coordination Center team in Asheville and looking for two dedicated people to help connect Veterans, service members, and their families to the resources they need across North Carolina.

VSC Care Coordinator (Full-Time)
In this role, you will conduct assessments, perform outreach, and make referrals to network providers based on each client’s needs and goals. You will build strong relationships with community partners and help support the health and wellbeing of those who have served. Two years of experience working with at-risk populations is required, with Veteran experience preferred.

VSC Lead Care Coordinator (Full-Time)
This role oversees the day-to-day operations of the Coordination Center, ensuring coverage, maintaining data integrity in Unite Us, and providing guidance and training to the team. In addition to the core coordination responsibilities, you will help lead special projects and support the NCServes leadership team. Two years of experience with at-risk populations and 1–2 years in a call center setting are required.

Both positions follow the Whole Person Care model and offer the chance to make a real difference in the lives of Veterans and their families.

“Good enough” isn’t a standard we’re willing to live with. Our Veterans and their families deserve more than that, which is exactly why our team is spending this week sharpening how we coordinate care. Watching our care coordinators come together, ask hard questions, and hold one another to a higher standard is what this work is all about. Day 1 reminded us why alignment matters so much, because when we’re in step with each other, North Carolina’s Veterans feel the difference.

A Heartfelt Thank You - Lumbee Stand Down Recap

Over 100 Veterans were served at the Lumbee Tribe Veteran Stand Down on June 6th, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who made it happen.

A special thank you to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina for your partnership, your hospitality, and your heart for our Veterans. Events like this are a powerful reminder of what happens when a community comes together with one shared mission — to serve those who have served us.

To every Veteran who came through the doors at the Boys and Girls Club: we see you, we honor you, and we are here for you.

None of this would have been possible without our outstanding partners:

Blue Cross NC — event sponsor
MISSION BBQ — lunch served with pride
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
UNC Health
UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Lumber River Workforce Development Board
NCWorks

Thank you all for showing up for our Veterans.

On Wednesday, Asheville Tourists fans showed up backpacks in hand, for Operation Packs for Patriots. Fans packed backpacks full of essential supplies to be distributed directly to Veterans entering support programs. Veterans Services of the Carolinas was proud to be one of the nonprofit beneficiaries alongside Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry. For Veterans starting over with few resources these care packages aren’t just backpacks, they represent a community that sees them, values them, and wants to help them thrive.

A huge thank you to the Asheville Tourists Baseball Club, Best Buy Metals Asheville, our sponsors, and every volunteer who brought their heart (and their backpack) to the ballpark. Want to help support Veterans? Visit us at abccm-vsc.org

Asheville Tourists fans traded baseball gloves for backpacks Wednesday night as they assembled care packages for local veterans during Operation Packs for Patriots at HomeTrust Park.

The backpacks, filled with essential items, will be distributed through local veteran support organizations including ABCCM and Veterans Services of the Carolinas.
