How to learn about Godโฆ
Ah, The Holy Bible. It seems like it would be easy to open it up, give it a peek, and understand everything you read. But nay. A question I'm often asked is: How do I study my Bible?
Iโm not an expert on this. I never will be. The more I learn, the less I know. But Iโll share 5 tips Iโve learned over the years. Iโm just a simpleton with access to the Good Book. And metaphors about bacon. Yes, bacon.
Tip #1: Read every day. More than 15 minutes. Spiritual matters are more important than physical (John 6:63, Col. 3:2). Bible time satisfies our soul like food satisfies our bellies. (Deut. 8:3, Phil. 2:16) The Bible is like bacon. But better ๐ฅ
Tip #2: Consult the Spirit. For the believer, we have God living INSIDE of us. Itโs important to pray that the Holy Spirit helps us understand what we read (John 16:13, 1 Cor. 6:19, John 17:17). The Spirit is the skillet to our bacon ๐ฅ
Top #3: Consult commentaries. If weโre confused over a text or want to dive deeper into its history and meaning, commentaries come in handy. Desiring God, Grace to You, and Blue-Letter Bible are all great resources. Commentaries are like โknowing howโ to cook that bacon ๐ฅ
Tip #4: Consult mature believers. If youโre a simpleton like me, asking a mature Christian is the thing to do (Titus 2:1-8). You could ask your small group leader or pastor. If you donโt have a small group leader or pastor, get one (Col. 3:16). Find a church (Heb. 12:1-2). A church is the touch of pepper to your bacon in your skillet ๐ฅ
Tip #5: Read more scripture than commentaries (Acts 17:11). Devotionals and insights from spiritual leaders are great. But we need to make sure we are consuming as much, if not more, scripture than we do supplementary materials (Heb. 4:12, 2 Tim. 3:16-17). We canโt just live on the knowledge of how to cook the bacon. We need to consume the bacon ๐ฅ
So, there are my 5 tips. Bringing home the bacon.
