Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory

Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory HBBO conducts long-term monitoring and applied research that provide scientific information about bird population and habitat relationships.

HBBO also promotes bird banding training for students and volunteers passionate about birds. Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory was established in 1982 by CJ Ralph, making it one of the longest-running bird monitoring stations in the United States. HBBO's bird banding program has been run since 1991 by Kim Hollinger, who started as a volunteer in 1989. The banding program is based on the support of vol

unteers and students interested in learning more about birds. The education and training of new bird banders and biologists is one of HBBO's primary goals. Several students from Humboldt Stat University have completed independent projects or Master's theses with HBBO. HBBO is affiliated with the Klamath Bird Observatory, and together, these non-profit organizations expand the effectiveness of their science and education programs through collaboration with an array of partners.
