One week left. Governor Newsom has until Sept 30 to decide on four coastal bills still sitting on his desk, and this is the moment our voices carry the most. 🌊

Three of Surfrider California’s priority bills are already signed, including more funding for coastal access through the Whale Tail plate. The four still pending would help keep new offshore drilling off our coast, cut down on disposable v**es washing up on our beaches, make “recyclable” labels actually mean something, and open the outdoors to more Californians. 🐚

If you’ve ever dug a v**e pen out of the sand at a cleanup, this one’s got your name on it. A quick note to the Governor through the link in our bio is some of the easiest stewardship of the season, and pretty sure your whole lineup would be stoked to add theirs too. 💙

KRCR stopped by to talk with our chapter chair Jessie Misha about Coastal Cleanup Day and why picking up trash along the Eureka waterfront matters so much for the seals, birds, and wildlife that call Humboldt Bay home. 🌊

Here's the thing Jessie said that stuck with us: cleanups are definitely part of the solution, but keeping trash out of our waterways in the first place is just as critical. Reusables over single-use plastics, every time. 🐚

Coastal Cleanup Day is tomorrow, Saturday September 19th, 10am to 1pm at 921 Waterfront Drive in Eureka. Free kayaks available first come, first served, so come right at 10 if you want to get on the water. No experience needed, all ages welcome, and you don't have to stay the whole time.

Trash along the Eureka waterfront is more than an eyesore — it can threaten seals, birds and other wildlife that rely on Humboldt Bay and nearby coastal waters.

Big shoutout to the local businesses fueling Coastal Cleanup Day this Saturday, 9/19! 🌊

Northtown Coffee, one of our Ocean Friendly Restaurants, is donating coffee to keep our volunteers warm and going. Los Bagels is donating bagels to keep everyone fed. And don’t worry, we’ve got you covered too, donuts are on us! ☕

Join us Saturday, September 19th from 10am to 1pm at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Dr. in Eureka. Volunteers will be cleaning up on land and by kayak along the water. All supplies provided, kids welcome, no experience needed. Just bring water, sun protection, and comfy clothes and shoes. Kayakers, a signed waiver is required to get on the water. 🛶

Huge thanks to Northtown Coffee and Los Bagels for being true community partners. Come hungry, come ready to work, and let’s take care of our waterways together. 💙

Saturday, September 19th, 10am–1pm, meeting at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center. Choose your crew: comb the shoreline with a bucket and grabber, or join our guided kayak team clearing trash right along the water. 🛶

All gear’s provided, kids are welcome, and no experience needed. We’re stoked to have you out there with us either way. Coffee and snacks on us! Waiver required to join. ☕

The Cigarette Surfboard premieres online September 15 to 27, timed to International Coastal Cleanup Day on the 19th. It follows surfer Taylor Lane building that board and turning it into a campaign to hold Big To***co accountable for the plastic waste we keep pulling out of the sand. There are live virtual Q&As with pro surfers and ocean activists during the window too. 🎬

If you were at our Arcata screening last November, you know how this one hits. If you missed it, this is your shot, and you can watch it from your couch. Tickets bought through our link send a portion back to the chapter, so you’re funding local cleanups and campaigns at the same time.🤙

You could have done anything with Saturday morning. You spent it at King Salmon with a bucket.

August 22 happens to be the day Surfrider Foundation turned 42, and you spent it giving this stretch of shoreline a better day than it started with.

Forty two years of ocean protection runs on people who show up. At cleanups, yes. Also in comment periods, at council meetings, and behind the bills that decide what reaches this beach in the first place. Saturday is where a lot of that starts. Gloves two sizes too big, a five gallon bucket of waterlogged cardboard, a driftwood seahorse standing guard over the whole operation, a toddler on her first cleanup.

Thank you to every single person for being stewards of the ocean.

Cleanups aren’t the only way in. Membership is $5 at humboldt.surfrider.org, and members are what put weight behind the chapter’s policy work.

Join us for our Beach + Invasives Cleanup in King Salmon. We’ll clear trash off the shoreline and pull invasive plants that crowd out our native dune habitat; two hours of real, visible impact for the coast we all love.

That’s a wrap! Tomorrow (7/17) is our final Friday Night Market of the season. 🌊

Come find the blue tent across from the gazebo in Old Town from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. This is the last time you’ll catch us at the market this summer, so swing by before we pack up.

To the crew who showed up at Clam Beach this morning: thank you.

It doesn’t take a hundred people to make a difference. It takes the ones who actually come. You spent your International Surfing Day with your hands in the sand, pulling out what doesn’t belong there, and the beach is cleaner tonight because you did.

Small crews do real work. Every piece of trash that left with you is one that won’t end up in the water.
