Meet Catherine Breed.

Former UC Berkeley All-American. Team USA swimmer. English Channel. North Channel. Lake Tahoe. Monterey Bay. The Golden Gate to Half Moon Bay which is a swim no one had done before.

This summer, she’s attempting something bigger. A 900+ mile swim down the entire California coast. From the Oregon border to Mexico. 3-4 months in the water.

No one has ever done it.

She’s swimming for Sea Dreamers, the nonprofit she founded to open ocean spaces to women and underrepresented communities. And one of her first stops is right here on the North Coast in water that doesn’t warm up, even in July.

More to come. 🌊

Somewhere north of here, a swimmer is about to enter the water.

She’s starting at the Oregon border. She’s heading for Mexico.

900+ miles. 3-4 months. The entire California coast, a first.

And one of her first stops is us.

Story coming soon. 🌊

The Eureka City Council just stood up for our coast. 🌊

On Tuesday night, council adopted a resolution opposing new and existing offshore oil and gas drilling, and deep seabed mining , off our shores. That’s a clear signal from local leadership that the Humboldt coast isn’t up for grabs.

Big thanks to the coalition that got this across the finish line: , , and . And a real thank you to the councilmembers who listened, asked good questions, and voted yes.

This kind of resolution doesn’t pass on its own. It passes because people show up to meetings, to public comment, to inboxes. If that’s you: thank you. If it’s not yet, this is your sign.

Drop a 🌅 in the comments to thank the council.

Ocean Night: Sequoias of the Sea panel. Part five.

“Ocean conservation doesn’t have to be the ‘world’s most depressing class.’ 🌊

Laurie Richmond from Cal Poly Humboldt reminds us that while the stats are heavy, these challenges are actually our biggest opportunities to innovate and remake systems together.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at the Arcata Theatre Lounge on April 23rd for our screening of Sequoias of the Sea. Community-led activism is how we keep the North Coast wild. 🌲🌊

Ocean Night: Sequoias of the Sea. Part four.

Indigenous leadership is at the heart of our coastal resilience. At last month’s Ocean Night, Kevin McKernan, Marine Director of the Yurok Tribe, shared how local tribes like the Trinidad Rancheria and the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation have been leading the way in marine monitoring and restoration for years.

It’s not just about finding “new” solutions; it’s about honoring the practices of keeping systems in balance that have been part of this coastline long before modern industry. Alongside partners like the Cal Poly Humboldt Marine Lab, we’re looking toward nature-based solutions to navigate the challenges of a changing climate.

Our relationship with the coast is changing, and it’s time we caught up.

At last month’s Ocean Night, Dr. Laurie Richmond from Cal Poly Humboldt broke down why we need to move beyond rigid infrastructure and let natural systems be dynamic again.

This snippet from the “Sequoias of the Sea” screening explores the potential for a “restoration economy” right here on the North Coast. We’re talking about shifting from old-school extraction to innovative, community-led aquaculture that builds real resilience for places like Fort Bragg.

The goal is a future that values Humboldt’s ecology as much as its economy.

Last month’s Ocean Night Part Two: 🌊

FilmmakerNatasha Benjamin didn’t just drop a heavy reality check on us and leave, she brought the playbook. The kelp crisis is massive, but sitting on the sidelines isn’t an option.

Here is exactly how we fight back right now:

🌊 Get Your Hands Dirty: Join Surfrider and show up to local beach cleanups. (Seriously, go join the Samoa Trash Bash Facebook group if you haven’t yet).

🤿 Dive & Document: If you’re getting in the water, take photos. Be the eyes on the sea floor and share what’s actually happening down there with your community.

🔥 Face the Root Cause: This is a climate story. We have to aggressively shift away from fossil fuels to cool our oceans.

⚖️ Back the Bill: Support the federal “Help Our Kelp Act” introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman to fund critical research and restoration.

Head to sequoiasofthesea.org to hit their Take Action page. Talk is cheap, let’s get to work. 🌊🌲

“It’s pretty much a wildfire happening underwater.” 🔥

If we lost 96% of our coastal redwoods, it would be front-page news everywhere. But because this devastation is happening beneath the surface, the collapse of our kelp forests stays largely out of sight.

Huge thanks to the community that packed the Arcata Theatre Lounge last month for our Surfrider Ocean Night screening of Sequoias of the Sea. It’s a heavy reality check, but we have to face exactly what’s happening down there before we can start fixing it.

This documentary lays it out: Our kelp needs help.
Head to sequoiasofthesea.org to learn more and find out how to take action.
