Taking a moment to reflect on The Big Read Finale, our celebration of the chosen book “We Are Here: Poetry In Natural World” by Ada Limòn. We are so grateful to all the performers, poets, and participants that made this event so special.

Special thanks to our funders and collaborators who helped us keep this free for our community. California Arts in Parks, National Endowment for the Arts, Humboldt County Library, and The Big Read managed by Arts Midwest.

Over the course of the past eight months, Playhouse Arts, in collaboration with the Humboldt County Library, has held discussions, writing workshops, and performances inspired by this shared collection of poems.

The book was made available to anyone who wanted to participate. We gave out 350 books and from it our community has been inspired to create.

Join us tonight (5/6) at 7PM for an interactive viewing of Brokeback Mountain in collaboration with

Artist Natalie Woodlock has been organizing screenings of Ang Lee’s film, handing out handkerchiefs at the beginning of the movie, and afterwards asking viewers to write down the scenes that make them cry.

She embroiders the names of each person who sheds tears on their handkerchief, and illustrates the scenes that bring viewers to tears for her artists’ book Tearjerker.

We are SO excited to unveil “Hear, Here!” a public sound archive of Arcata parks 🌲 This archive will serve as a free and publicly accessible resource for artists of various mediums, as well as culminate in an installation in fall 2026.

What is a sound archive? Sound archives are an alternative way to document collective memory of a place. They can be used for many purposes including film, music, podcasts, art installations, and more. For this first iteration of the project, we are collecting soundscapes from the following Arcata parks:

Greenview Playground
Stewart Park
Redwood Park
Larson Park
Arcata Marsh

So how can you participate? You can record your soundscapes with any device you would like, a phone works great. Recordings should be ~30 seconds to ~10 minutes long. Next, to submit your recording:

- upload it via the submission button found on playhousearts.org/hearhere or email it to [email protected] 💌
- be sure to include the park location and date of recording in your submission!

Tips: Consider what sounds are specific to this place and to the moment that you are recording. Try different locations around the park—see how the sounds vary. A soundscape that is true to a place won’t sound perfect or even pretty, necessarily— it is a portrait of a moment in time ⭐️

This project is made possible in collaboration with Carissa Clark (the painter/designer of the signs, ) the city of Arcata (), Neroli Devaney and Humboldt Hot Air (.7), California Arts in Parks program ( / ) & us, Playhouse Arts (.arts)

We can’t wait to gather your sounds of the days, nights, seasons and special moments in our amazing Arcata parks 🌱

get out and listen!
