The board members of DeSoto Cares Homeless Services (DCHS) recently met at the Memorial Marker installed by FDOT for Wilfredo Hernandez who was a client of DCHS. Pictured from left to right are: Steve Price, Mike Carter, Nancy Jo Vaughn (seated), Karen Smoke, Jay Ambler, Mike Provau, Rob Krost and Erica Palumbo.

Wilfredo was struck and killed on U S 17 south of Arcadia near the intersection of Heard St. while using the crosswalk with flashing beacons on the morning of September 6, 2025. Mr. Hernandez had been a frequent visitor to the homeless center where he showered, did laundry and relaxed in the air conditioning. To our knowledge Mr. Hernandez did not have any family, we were his family, providing what comfort we could through our limited services. He was known to sleep in a culvert in the vicinity of where he was killed.

While we regret that we were not able to provide more for him during his lifetime, we hope the Memorial Marker will remind others to be cautious when using the roadways. The crosswalks have flashing becons that may be activated via push buttons to stop traffic to allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the busy roadway.
