πΊπΈ A Night of Honor, Respect & Patriotism πΊπΈ
Wednesday night, Scout Troop 764 gathered in the parking lot of HRUMC for a very special American Flag Retirement Ceremony.
There may be some misconceptions about what took place Wednesday night, particularly regarding the burning of the American flag. What occurred was a properly conducted flag retirement ceremony, a long-standing Scouting tradition in which a flag that is worn, faded, torn, or otherwise no longer fit for service is respectfully retired.
πΊπΈ This was NOT an act of disrespect toward our flag or our country. Quite the oppositeβit was a solemn ceremony conducted with great care, dignity, and respect for what the American flag represents.
All applicable laws were obeyed, and the Scouts conducted the ceremony in a safe and respectful manner. Local police officers spoke with the Troop, including the Scouts who are working toward becoming Eagle Scouts and the Eagle Scout who was in attendance. The officers were extremely impressed with the Scoutsβ knowledge, behavior, and the respect with which the ceremony was conducted.
The American flag represents our freedom, our nation, and the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. When a flag has reached the end of its useful life, properly retiring it is a way of honoring that flag rather than simply throwing it away.
Watching these young men participate in this meaningful tradition was a wonderful reminder that Scouting is about much more than camping and outdoor skills. It teaches respect, responsibility, leadership, service, citizenship, and patriotism.
A heartfelt thank-you to Scout Troop 764 for giving Old Glory the dignity and respect she deserves. And thank you to the officers who took the time to speak with our Scouts and recognize the significance of what they were doing.
πΊπΈ Proud of our Scouts. Proud of the way they honored our flag.
Proud of Troop 764. πΊπΈ
βThe flag is a symbol of our nation, and retiring it properly is an act of respectβnot disrespect.β
πΊπΈ Thank you to all who serve and have served our country. πΊπΈ
