Historical Society of Furnas-Gosper Counties, Nebraska "Preserving and Interpreting the Histories of Furnas and Gosper Counties in Nebraska"

08/09/2019

This past week a lot of history was made in Furnas County. The owners of the Cambridge Clarion (CAMAS) bought and started printing the Arapahoe Public Mirror and the Elwood Bulletin. Having already bought the newspapers of Indianola, Bartley, Curtis (all of Frontier County), Oxford, and Beaver City, this will form a Regional Newspaper. The circulation is around 1,500 subscribers.
I think that most information from the past newspapers must go through the Cambridge Clarion. After the paper has been printed so many days, it will change its name, and the Cambridge Clarion will no longer be a name. How many Furnas County and Gosper County newspaper names can you remember? I'll start with the Wilsonville Kaleidoscope. I'm sure that Hendley had one but I can't remember the name. It was made by Edwin Perkins, the inventor of Kool-aid, when he lived in Hendley. Edwin bought a printing press and was also the town's Postmaster for a while.

We did not have our Annual Museum cleaning this year. So we apologize for the way that it looks. We don't have enough help to keep it open on the weekends like we once did. But if you would like to go through it, I'll get a number posted. Thank you!

I don't know where we will be yet for July 4th and if we will get to have our Annual Open House at the Museum. Most activities are down at the Park that day, and that is where most spend their day. So we are at a disadvantage being on the highway. I'm really certain that there will not be a Scavenger hunt this year. If we are open that day, it will be for a few hours. That's just the way that things have become, as we are very short on membership.

We will be having a Historical Society Meeting on June 20th at 5pm. I forgot to ask where we will have it. Lately it has been at Prairie Pines in Arapahoe. Everyone is Welcome to join in. Infact we would like to know if there are interested parties that may want to join and revitalize our organization.

Hi, if you are wondering the Historical Society of Furnas-Gosper Counties is still in operation. It's just been a little tough getting things put together with months of sickness. We will have a meeting in March 2019 to get back and going. My apologies for all that has happened and not being able to get back to everyone on questions that they have asked the Historical Society about. - Bob T., Pres. Historical Society of Furnas-Gosper Counties.

Don't forget our Open House and Scavenger Hunt from 11 am to 3 pm today.

A couple of things have been asked to be updated on here. One thing was an address for our website. I don't think that we will have a website anytime soon. I had began work on one, but my business has taken time away from that. Secondly, a few have asked about our Museum hours. We are open during the summer time from the first of May until Labor Day on the weekend afternoons. We are Open from 1 - 4 pm on those days. But we also open at anytime by appointment.
As with many organizations, we have many who cannot help as much as they used to. But the majority continues to keep the Museum going. The younger one's are busy with jobs, so it is hard to keep it open as much as we would like.
If you need information, please email me at [email protected] and type "Furnas-Gosper Museum" in the Subject line. That way I can see it sooner. Thanks.
