in 1919, Kate Lee Harris Adams was born in Durham, NC and would eventually graduate from Durham High School in 1937. Her childhood was filled with dreams of flying so it was no surprise when she accepted the opportunity to take a Civilian Pilot Training (CPT) course while attending Duke. She graduated in 1941 with a degree in Fine Arts and went on to WASP training shortly after.

With her pinned wings, she conducted solo flights to test AT-6 planes needing repair at Napier Field in Dothan, AL. She also ferried aircraft and acted as a flight instructor for flight cadets.

After the war, she lived in Houston, TX, only moving back to Durham in her final years. When asked about her time as a WASP, she remarked, "I loved every second of it."

For years, the WASP experiment was classified and when information about it was finally available to the public, Adams was thrilled. Do you know what year that was?

Erin Miller talks with WASP Mary Anna "Marty" Martin Wyall, Florence "Shutsy" Shutsy-Miller, and Shirley Chase Kruse at a memorial service held at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, after a funeral service, with full military honors, for her grandmother, WASP Elaine Danforth Harmon, at Arlington National Cemetery in 2016.

Harmon's family worked since her death in April of 2015, at 95 years old, to reverse a U.S. Army decision, that same year, to revoke the eligibility for WASP for interment at Arlington. The WASP were awarded military status in 1977 and determined to be eligible for interment in 2002. The bill reestablishing their eligibility, championed in the House of Representatives by Rep. and former Air Force fighter pilot Martha McSally, R-Ariz. 2nd District, passed Congress unanimously and was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2016.

Join us in wishing a happy birthday to the venerable B-25 Mitchell!

On 19 August 1940, the North American B-25 Mitchell made its maiden flight at Mines Field (now Los Angeles International Airport), piloted by Vance Breese with Roy Ferren as co-pilot. The Mitchell would go on to become one of the most widely used and versatile bombers of WWII, serving with distinction in every theater of the war. Over 9,800 units were built, and the type continued in service well into the postwar years with several air forces.

Today, the CAF operates six Mitchells:

✪ Maid in the Shade of the CAF Airbase Arizona
✪ Show Me of the Commemorative Air Force Missouri Wing
✪ Yellow Rose of the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing
✪ Commemorative Air Force B-25 Devil Dog
✪ Semper Fi (world's only flying PBJ) of CAF SoCal
✪ Miss Mitchell of the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing

, August 13, 1911, Matilde Moisant became the second woman in the United States to earn a pilot’s license under the rules of the Aero Club of America. Harriet Quimby had become the first only twelve days earlier.

Moisant learned to fly at the Moisant Aviation School on Long Island, founded by her brothers, pioneering aviators John and Alfred Moisant. After proving her skill before Aero Club officials, she received pilot certificate No. 44 and entered the daring world of exhibition flying.

The following month, Moisant climbed to approximately 1,200 feet during an aviation meet at Nassau Boulevard on Long Island. The flight established a women’s altitude record and earned her the Rodman-Wanamaker trophy.

Moisant’s flying career was brief. After surviving a crash in Wichita Falls, Texas, in April 1912, she retired from aviation. Still, her achievements came at a time when powered flight itself was new and few women had been permitted to train, compete or earn official recognition as pilots.
