Today, the SSCN attended the unveiling of a stainless steel sculpture of a flock of Whooping Cranes meticulously created by Artist Joe Powers from Washington State very near the Canadian border.
After yesterday's rain downpour, Thursday, May 28, 2026 was a steamy mid-morning for US Fish and Wildlife Service, dozens of supporters from Friends of Aransas, Mid-Coast Texas Master Naturalists, local Artists and Nature Photographers, Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio River Authority, and others.
Powers used science-based knowledge gathered from several Wildlife Biologists and self-study to shape the precise number of feathers in a Whooping Crane body.
He said the metallic sculpture will outlive everybody in 2026....but hopefully, just as long as the resilient Whooping Cranes!
