Cub Creek Foundation is fortunate to have Chris Pate as our Visiting Artist. Pate arrived in rural Virginia at the beginning of 2026 and immediately got to work in his studio. Originally from central Louisiana. Pate received his Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Anthropology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette while being introduced to ceramics. In 2010 he relocated to Portland, Oregon and continued his investigations into clay, firing techniques, and kiln designs. For the past 14 years, Pate has passionately wood-fired his pottery and sculptural work in a variety of wood kilns around the country. Pate’s knowledge and enthusiasm on kiln building, ceramic technology, and craftsmanship is broad, conscientious and exceptional.

Meet Warren Stetler (), a material researcher and ceramic artist currently in residence here at Cub Creek Foundation. Warren describes his work as a “systematic experiment.” Whether he’s test-firing local rock dust or developing glazes from eggshells and industrial waste, his practice is about pushing the limits of what a clay body can be.

He’s currently knee-deep in his “A Penny For Your Pottery” project - a massive undertaking to create 10,000 pieces where the price of each piece increases by exactly one penny ($0.01, $0.02, $0.03...). He is currently on piece numbers in the 2000s. It’s part production, part psychology, and part economic experiment.

Cub Creek Foundation is beginning its 24th year in the ceramic arts! We have put together a fundraiser through gofundme to fix our driveways, walkways, and expand our kiln pad to build a train kiln.

Your financial support will ensure the future of CCF and help emerging artists navigate the property and facility with ease.

Please take a minute to view our fundraiser, share with anyone that may be able to help support our mission, and as always, give John a call to say hi! He would love to hear from all of you!
