Please take the time to read and act on this information regarding invasive New Zealand mud snails - when visiting the Driftless Region appropriate actions from all fishers maybe what keeps New Zealand mud snails out of our Central Wisconsin trout streams.

Just another reminder that upper Seas Branch has New Zealand Mudsnails. Signs are up and you can't miss them!

West Fork Sports Club has signs at the clubhouse too.

Our August habitat day is scheduled for Saturday August 15th from 7:45am to 1pm. Come join FVTU, Central Wisconsin TU, the WI DNR, and the campers from this year's WITU Youth Camp for some restoration work and a lunch on Davies Creek near Wild Rose, WI.

The more people we talk to, the more we hear about declining hatches around the Driftless area encompassing SW Wisconsin, SE Minnesota, and NE Iowa.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is accepting public comments on whether the state’s current rules adequately protect our natural resources from the contamination of neonicotinoid-treated seeds.

The numbers don’t lie! We need to all work together to take care of our native brook trout…..

Wisconsin is losing its only native inland trout and most people have no idea it is happening.
Brook trout are the fish that were here before any of us. Brown trout and rainbows were stocked into Wisconsin waters in the late 1800s. Brookies were already in these streams when the first surveyors showed up. They are the real thing, and they are disappearing.
The numbers tell the story. A DNR shocking survey on the North Fork of the Clam River turned up over 1,100 brown trout and fewer than 200 brookies. The state projects that by the middle of this century, two out of every three miles of brook trout water in Wisconsin will be too warm to hold them. That is roughly 15,000 stream miles gone out of 22,000. The streams are getting warmer, the floods are getting bigger, and brook trout eggs and fry cannot take the punishment.
The DNR is responding with a program called Brook Trout Reserves. Cold water streams that can still support wild brookies get extra protection, including catch and release rules. A stretch of the North Fork of the Clam above County Highway H just went into the program this year after a fisheries biologist flagged the declining surveys.
Here in the northland we sit on some of the last cold water strongholds these fish have. The spring fed creeks running off the Bayfield Peninsula and through the Chequamegon country are exactly the kind of water brook trout need to survive the next 30 years. What happens to that water matters.
If you fish brookies, know the new rules before you go. And if you catch one of those dark backed beauties with the red spots and white tipped fins, get it back in the water quick. Your grandkids are going to want to meet one.
