This week's Species Saturday observation is Common Coral Slime, observed at Wequiock Creek Natural Area by Matt Welter (matt227 on iNaturalist).

We often think of finding plants, animals, or fungi when we are out in nature. But Common Coral Slime (and other slime molds) don't belong in any of these three classifications. They are actually part of the grouping of protists (any eukaryotic organism that is not a plant, animal, or fungi).

Today, we are celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity! This is a day to bring awareness to the countless unique species that call Earth home and to the varied threats facing biodiversity on a local and global scale.

Here at NEWLT, we want to help our community connect with our local biodiversity, both on our protected preserves and throughout our larger region. This new sign will help enhance our efforts to engage our community in discovering and documenting biodiversity.

Thank you to Seeding Action (a program of the Association of Science and Technology Centers)
and iNaturalist.org for providing these signs, and thank you to our friends at Heckrodt Wetland Reserve for making us aware of this opportunity.

The Community Waters Coalition is a community advisory committee working to be a bridge between the DNR and the community in and around the Green Bay Area of Concern. Our Conservation Engagement Specialist Paul is one member of this committee, along with other community members of varied professions and backgrounds.

You are invited to save the date for the CWC’s first public event, which will be an opportunity to learn more about ongoing management efforts and to help ensure that these efforts align with community needs.
