Troop 8 - 100 Year Celebration

Troop 8 - 100 Year Celebration Our History: Troop 8 has been a great place for kids to learn and grow and have fun.

First chartered on October 1st, 1920, Troop 8 has helped over 125 young adults achieve the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the dissolution of Troop 8. The troop has dropped its charter and has ceased to exist. The last boys will be joining other Appleton troops.

Thousands of boys have passed through Troop 8 over the last 100+ years - almost 150 of them reaching the rank of Eagle. There have been countless campfires made and merit badges earned. Boys have learned how to tend to burns and breaks and how to cook using a few food items and some tin foil. They have learned how to do their duty to God and to serve others. They have had untold experiences they would never have gotten anywhere else - experiences that built character, developed leadership, trained them to be good citizens, and made them physically and mentally fit.

Thank you to all the leaders who gave of their time and talent over ten decades. You are appreciated. What a shame we did not have a chance to celebrate Troop 8's 100th anniversary and thank all those who helped make Troop 8 great.

For those who have been wondering, the troop committee has decided NOT to have a 100th Anniversary celebration this summer. I have turned over all my files, photos, email lists, etc. to the troop to use in the future if they decide to have a celebration, which I sincerely hope they do. It has been fun learning more about the troop from old records and scrapbooks, and I hope we are all able to get together someday and reminisce in person. Linda Hash

In 1998, Troop 8 celebrated its 75th anniversary. (Yes, they were a few years behind, too.)
Most of the photos that have been posted on this page have come from photo albums that were prepared especially for the 75th anniversary.
We have very few photos from 2000-2006 so if you have any to share, please let us know.

In 1983, the troop attended a camporee at Elkhart Lake. The guest of honor was William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt who was an influential scouting leader on the national stage for nearly seven decades. He was a Boys' Life columnist, authored many scouting handbooks, and was instrumental in launching the American version of the Wood Badge program for adult scouters.

A blast from the not so distant past. Troop 8 packed food with Feed My Starving Children several times in the last decade as part of it's commitment to "help other people at all times." Here are photos from 2014 and 2015.

The troop served as an honor guard for the annual Appleton Memorial Day commemorations at Riverside Cemetery during the 1980s. Unfortunately, we don't know which year these photos were taken. If you do, please let us know through a comment.

In 1983, Troop 8 scouts explored the USS Edson, a Forrest Sherman class destroyer built in 1958 which saw extensive action off the coast of Vietnam and was involved in the evacuation of Saigon. The USS Edson was decommissioned in 1988 and can now be seen at the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum in Bay City, MI.
