✨ Blaze — 16hh Flaxen Chestnut Paint Mare ✨

📍 Apple Valley, CA

Meet Blaze, a beautiful, flashy 16hh flaxen chestnut Paint mare looking for the right person to continue bringing out her potential.

Blaze has been my main rescue project for a short period of time, and I’ve become quite attached to her while working with her. Unfortunately, I’m moving and won’t be able to continue her training, so I’m looking for someone who will enjoy taking over where I’ve left off.

She is a smart, willing green broke mare with a lot of potential. She has that classic, long-legged halter-horse look and is extremely flashy. With continued training, I could absolutely see her developing into a lovely Western Pleasure/show prospect.

🐴 Training & Ground Work

Blaze has had consistent work and is progressing nicely.

Lunges at a walk, trot, and canter and does not rush
Turns toward you while being lunged and will follow you
Yields her hindquarters and forequarters from the ground
Has been ground driven
Has had desensitizing work and exposure to new things
Very good with other horses
Good ground manners
Backs readily from the ground
Backs under saddle
Moves off leg at the walk and trot
Bends very nicely
Walks and trots under saddle
Has ridden with another horse and was very “whoa”
Smart and picks things up quickly
Willing and attentive during training

She is currently green broke. I have only worked her under saddle at the walk and trot, so she is not being represented as a finished riding horse. She will need someone experienced to continue her education and put more miles on her.

🌵 Temperament & Handling

Blaze is a smart, sweet mare who has been a very rewarding project to work with.

She is very good with other horses and has ridden with another horse while remaining calm and very “whoa.”

She does need patience and time with the farrier. This is an area she is still working on, and she does best with a patient, experienced farrier who is willing to give her time.

🩻 Feet / X-rays

Blaze has minuscule (almost nonexistent) rotation in the right front and currently is being corrected by wearing pads as part of her hoof management. Otherwise, her X-rays are clean.

Her current hoof-care program should be continued and discussed with the buyer’s veterinarian and farrier.

PPE welcome at buyer’s expense.

Blaze is not a finished horse and is not being offered as a beginner-safe or bombproof mount. She is a genuine project with a lot of potential for someone who enjoys developing a horse.

She has the looks, movement, brain, and willingness to become something really special with the right person and continued miles. I have truly enjoyed working with her and would love to see her go somewhere that will continue giving her the time, patience, and training she deserves.

The Hard Truth About Rescue Burnout: Unrealistic Expectations, Rider Anxiety, and Mare Prejudice 💔🐴
Let’s be completely real today. The reality of running a horse rescue is incredibly heavy. Our inbox fills up daily, and statistically, 8 out of 10 inquiries ask for the exact same impossible unicorn: a dead-broke, bombproof horse that can be ridden completely alone, compete tomorrow, and be safe for anyone to hop on. (The next time, those inquiries won’t even get a reply!)

We need to talk about where many of these "bombproof" requests come from. A huge portion of these inquiries are from women in their 50s and 60s who love horses but have lost their riding confidence—often because they suffered a fall in the past. It is completely natural to be afraid of getting hurt, and we deeply sympathize with that fear.

But here is the hard, physiological truth about horses: they are prey animals. They mirror our energy. If a rider is deeply anxious, terrified, and tense in the saddle, even the most rock-solid, bombproof horse in the world is eventually going to turn into a nervous wreck.

You cannot expect a horse to be a flawless machine when the person in the saddle is feeding them constant nervous energy. Confidence is a partnership that you have to work on yourself; you cannot just buy or adopt it ready-made in a horse.
And here is the kicker that truly breaks our hearts: even when we have an absolutely amazing, steady, one-in-a-million horse available who could help a rider build that confidence, she gets completely ignored simply because she is a mare.

The prejudice against mares in the equine industry is the most sexist, outdated nonsense out there. Buyers would literally rather adopt a green, unpredictable gelding and hope it turns out safe than adopt a rock-solid, brilliant mare standing right in front of them. This bias has become so toxic that some rescues across the country have completely stopped taking in mares altogether because the public leaves them sitting in paddocks forever. That is a horrifying reality.

Mares like Ballerina are the backbone of the horse world. A good mare doesn't care about industry stereotypes; she cares about true partnership, and once she trusts you, she will protect you with her whole heart.

If you are filling a rescue's inbox looking for a fairytale machine to cure your anxiety—or if you are scrolling past incredible horses just because of their gender—you are missing the true meaning of horsemanship. It is time for the horse community to drop the unrealistic checklists, bust the mare myths, and start looking at the actual horse.

Rescue takes more than love—it takes feed, vet care, farrier work, shelter, supplies, and a safe place to land. Every horse we save becomes a promise that we will continue to care for them, no matter what.
