If I’m honest, the moment it hit me that we would be welcoming another child into our family almost 3 years ago, my immediate reaction was not excitement.

Outside of understanding that there would be loss for this baby and his mother when adoption is necessary, all the excuses the enemy could throw my way filled my mind about why this wasn’t the right time for us. And some of those excuses seemed very logical and valid.

But the reality is when we are wrestling with whether or not to take a child in, it’s usually not because we aren’t capable or that we have not been blessed with more than enough in this life to be able to care for that child.

Often it’s because we allow fear that our comfortable lives will be disrupted and that our children will experience the disappointment that comes from putting others before themselves.

But isn’t this what the Gospel commands us to do?

Of course welcoming this precious baby has changed our lives. But not only has he brought joy and laughter to our home, he reminds us and our other children that life is not just about ourselves and that when we choose to trust God, He will give us the strength, energy and wisdom to navigate the challenges that come from disrupting our former routines and plans we’ve made for ourselves.

Currently Hope Bridge is taking a survey about what barriers prevent families from saying “yes” to foster care. The number one reason: “concern for how it will affect our children (if we do foster care).”

I would like to challenge you in this: how would it affect your children if you choose NOT to step into foster care? How would it affect them if we continue to teach them that life is all about comfort, activities, sports, entertainment, material wealth and themselves?

If you feel the tug to step in to foster care but have questions & fears, please reach out to us. We are fellow believers who have said “yes” to the hard, sat in the mess, wrestled with doubts and fears, struggled with our own selfish desires, cried in frustration with the system and yet have seen the greatness of God that comes when we choose to live out our faith.

James 1:27 (NIV) Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

September is Grandparent & Kinship Month, a time to celebrate the grandparents, relatives, and family friends who step up when a child needs a safe and loving home.

In Ohio, more than 3,600 children in foster care are living in kinship care with relatives or close family connections. That means thousands of Ohio families are saying “yes” to caring for a child they already love, often unexpectedly and with little time to prepare.

Kinship care can be deeply rewarding, but it can also come with unique challenges.

Hope Bridge offers support groups for kinship caregivers, a place to connect with others who understand, find encouragement, and walk through this journey together.

If you're a grandparent, relative, or family friend caring for a child, we'd love to have you join us.

Hope’s House serves many foster kids in several counties. We receive generous donations from all over the community, which means it takes a lot of work to:
Go through those donations, launder/clean items, fold/sort and inventory them so they are ready to go!

“Adoptive/Kinship caregiver sentenced to prison for starving a child to death in Stark County”.

“Mom killed son (3yrs old) after regaining custody from adoptive family in Cuyahoga County”.

“Child endured years of abuse in Summit County (foster) home”

Sick. Outrage. Heartbroken. These are feelings that often hit us when we read these articles. We demand answers. We ask why. We talk with others about it and share our opinions about the brokenness of the system.

And then there is that moment…. When a small still voice asks us, “But what are YOU going to do about it?” And we must choose whether to remain a bystander hoping someone else will step into action or take action ourselves.

We believe unless the Church and those who are part of it are awakened, to move into action on behalf of vulnerable children & families in our community, things are only going to get worse.

No, what you are being asked to step into is not easy. But it’s also not easy for the children suffering at the hands of their abuser or for the child who has no idea where their next meal will come from or the baby struggling from heroine with drawls. It’s not easy for young teen who is now being trafficked because no one saw her as worthy enough to step into this very broken system.

Yes this is a broken system and YES there is something you can do about it.

Message us for more information on ways you can get involved.

At the Stark County Foster Parent banquet, kindness showed up in the sweetest way. Lisa entered the raffle for a wagon and she said she would donate it to Hope’s House if she won. When Robin shared that she could really use one for appointments, I told her I would make sure she got it.
Lisa’s ticket was drawn-and we were able to bless Robin with the wagon.
This is what community looks like. Generosity, compassion, and people looking out for one another.
