Pope endorses One Health approach

In his audience on February 16, 2026 with the members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Leo XIV recalled that, in a world torn apart by conflict, it is necessary to do everything possible to protect life …..the concept of "One Health," promoted by the World Health Organization as a multidisciplinary, integrated, and global approach, represents a path forward for balanced development. It demonstrates how human life is unsustainable without other creatures. This approach, affirms Leo XIV, is in harmony with global bioethics, an area of ​​interest for the Pontifical Academy for Life. Regarding public action, the Pope adds: "One Health requires integrating the health dimension into all policies (transport, housing, agriculture, employment, education, etc.), aware that health is built at the intersection of all dimensions of social life."

Get involved in the ISOHA One Health Mentorship Program

Open Call for both Mentors and Mentees for the February - August 2026 cycle

The goal of this six-month program is to connect students interested in One Health careers with established One Health professionals who share overlapping interests. Beyond one-on-one mentorship, participants are encouraged to share networks with one another to foster meaningful professional relationships that extend beyond the formal duration of the program. ISOHA will match each mentor with one or more mentees for a total duration of six months. Continued communication beyond the program is encouraged but not required or regulated by ISOHA. Certificates will be issued upon completion of the program to participants who submit documentation verifying six meetings.

Requirements:
Mentees: Students aged 18+ enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral-level degree.

Mentors:
Completion of a Master’s degree, DVM, PhD, MD, or equivalent, or
Completion of an undergraduate degree with at least five years of professional experience in a One Health–related field
Past or present experience working in One Health–related fields and/or initiatives

Expectations
At least six mentor–mentee meetings between February and August 2026 (recommended minimum duration: 10-15 minutes).
ISOHA will host a virtual “Meet and Greet” at the start of the program.
Mentees are responsible for initiating contact and scheduling meetings.
ISOHA does not schedule meetings or provide meeting platforms.
Mentees must upload documentation (e.g., screenshots or call history) after each meeting.
Both mentors and mentees are required to complete a feedback form at the end of the program.
Participants unable to uphold their commitment must notify their partner and the ISOHA Mentorship Committee as soon as possible.
