Sanctuary Stables Therapy Horses-

Our horses and ponies provide physical, emotional, and behavioral benefits through their therapeutic interactions with humans. Research has validated that interactions with animals can reduce our stress levels and increase our levels of well being. More recently, the benefits of using horses in animal assisted therapies and activities has been well documented, by being an integral component in the success of treatments and educational programs. Our team of therapy horses work with people of all ages suffering from grief and trauma, people suffering with post traumatic stress disorder, the elderly, and with adults and children with disabilities. They also work with foster children, at risk and abused children, and Veterans. Emotional and mental wounds can be mended by bonding with these large, gentle animals. Sanctuary Stables is available for onsite sessions and visitation in a peaceful and beautiful park-like setting. Sanctuary Stables Horse Rescue & Retirement

We teach compassion and responsibility for horses through education, outreach and intervention. Equines are our focus, but our doors are always open to ANY animal in need. Sanctuary Stables is proud to offer our:

Sanctuary Stables Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning Programs

Sanctuary Stables offers EAP and EAL programs that are experiential forms of psychotherapy and learning in a safe and fun environment. The equine is a critically important partner in the work of both EAP and EAL. The concept that horses might be helpful or healing to people struggling with mental health issues is based on the idea that horses (as domestic prey animals) are extremely sensitive to changes in the human being (as a predatory creature). Due to their sensitivity, horses react and respond to people differently based on a person's emotional state. The horse acts as a large biofeedback machine, providing the client and therapist with information regarding the client's moods, and changes within those moods. If a client arrives anxious, the horse will act and respond one way. If the client is able to reduce his or her anxiety, the horse's behaviors will also change. This provides a plethora of information and skill building opportunities for both the client and the therapist. In an educational setting, horses and the lifestyle that goes along with maintaining horses, provides opportunities to teach critical life and communication skills. Horses mostly use non-vocal communication, and thus are wonderful teachers to help us better understand and learn how our non-verbal communication might be impacting or influencing others in our lives. Horses also demand that we are aware of our surroundings at all times. In order to stay safe around horses we must be observant and present in our bodies. We have to listen to each other and the horses. We have to stay focused and attentive. To care for horses takes dedication, time, and effort and our clients can learn a strong work ethic that may transition back into their daily lives. Furthermore, clients gain self-esteem and self-confidence while learning how to work with such a large and powerful creature. In all, horses provide us with a way to see our internal landscape and modes of operation exposed. They offer us humility, compassion and challenge- all critical elements to supporting self-growth and self-awareness.

There’s a quiet grief many animal people carry when they begin seeing things differently.

Because once you realize how much of traditional animal handling was built around suppression instead of understanding…
you can’t fully unsee it.

You notice how often animals are praised for tolerating discomfort.
How often fear gets labeled as “respect.”
How often shutdown gets mistaken for calmness.

And for a while, it can feel heartbreaking.

But then something beautiful starts happening too.

You begin noticing the tiny signs of aliveness returning.

The horse who starts expressing opinions again.
The dog who becomes playful after years of hypervigilance.
The animal who finally realizes:
“I don’t have to disappear to be safe here.”

That moment changes both lives.

Because animals were never meant to be emotional machines built for human convenience.

They are nations unto themselves.
Full beings.
With inner worlds as rich and meaningful as our own.

And when we stop trying to dominate those worlds…
we get invited into them.

Morning Mantra: “I am the answer.”

Question: “What is the answer to saving the world? To making it better?”
Answer: “You.”

You are the key. Each and every person has the key.
Heal yourself of trauma and pain,
know yourself and what holds you back,
so you can make yourself whole and free.

When you release all the self-imposed limits your love can flow unconditionally to yourself and the world.
This will open up the heaven of your heart completely and it will change everything.
Divine love is always the answer to what you seek.

Where the Horse Keeps Her Sorrows

The white horse came to her
on a quiet moon night,
when the rivers were sleeping
and even the wind spoke softly.

He lowered his head beside her
as if he already knew
the weight she carried inside.

“Why do you walk
with so much sadness in your spirit?”
the horse asked.

The girl touched his silver mane
and answered:

“Because I have loved deeply.
Because I have lost things
I cannot call back.”

The horse stood silent for a long while.

Then he said,

“The earth loses the leaves every autumn,
yet spring still returns.
The moon disappears,
yet she always finds her way back to the sky.”

The girl closed her eyes,
listening.

His breath was warm as cedar smoke.
His heartbeat sounded
like distant drums beneath the mountains.

“My people once believed,”
the horse whispered,
“that sorrow is not meant
to be carried forever.
You must place some of it
into the hands of the earth.”

So she leaned her forehead against his,
and little by little,
her grief flowed out
like rain returning to the soil.

The stars watched quietly.

And before dawn arrived,
the horse spoke once more:

“You are not alone, daughter of the earth.
Even wounded spirits
still deserve to run free.”
