As a result of the current social climate, individuals who differ from the norm of cis-gendered white male struggle under the weight of knowing that the identities that comprise their being (race, gender, sexuality, religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, etc.) The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) acknowledges that in this, youth tend to be the most vulnerable, yet are simultaneously the

most susceptible to the erasure of their voices, their narratives, and their power. Through the unique combination of sewing, social justice and culturally relevant curriculum/activities, SJSA aims to create emboldened activists and empowered leaders that are committed to addressing issues impacting their local and often times, larger communities.

I was blessed beyond words to call the Honorable Reverend Jesse Jackson my Godfather.

He was not only a global icon, a civil rights giant, and a voice for justice — he was present in my life in the most personal ways. He wrote the foreword to my book. He championed my professional pursuits. He believed in me. But even more than that, he remembered my birthday. He called. He checked in. He shared stories — first-person accounts of history that most people only read about in textbooks.

To sit at his feet and hear him speak about marching, organizing, negotiating, praying, persevering — not as legend, but as lived experience — was a gift I will never take lightly. I was raised around greatness, but more importantly, I was raised around conviction, courage, and compassion.

He showed me that leadership is service. That faith and justice belong in the same sentence. That our lives must stand for something larger than ourselves.

Rest in Power to a legend. Your voice shaped a nation. Your presence shaped my life.

And I will carry both with me always.

Love is an action verb—and my dad lives it every day. From painting the garage to make space for quilt storage, to setting up sew days and more - his presence has been the biggest gift. Grateful beyond words for a father who shows up with steady love, quiet strength, and unmatched care. Happy Father’s Day to all the present parents 💙

Today would have been Ahmaud Arbery’s 31st birthday. He should be here-celebrating, running freely, surrounded by love. Instead, his life was taken senselessly, a reminder of how deeply racial injustice is woven into the fabric of this country.

We honor him by always remembering him. We will never forget you, Ahmaud. We are here with your family. And we will always stand for our rights-our right to live. Our right to rest. Our right to love.

The Social Justice Sewing Academy has partnered with Bay Area organizations to create a dedicated maker space and recreation center for neurodivergent youth and adults. This initiative will offer individuals with developmental disabilities a safe space to learn and thrive creatively.

Our space will offer activities such as sewing, cooking, painting, pottery, gaming, socializing, and much more!
