On April 16th, 2007, Virginia Tech became the sight of one of the deadliest school shootings that this country has been plagued by.

19 years later, the fight against gun violence continues. It is our responsibility to honor these 32 souls with action.

37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota today.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” her mother said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

This is our beautiful son Joaquin “Guac” Oliver who was killed at age 17 in the Parkland shooting.

He was an activist. He stood up for what he believed in even when others stayed silent.

We owe it to him— and to the 40,000 victims of senseless gun violence that are taken every year— to do better.

Akilah’s passion, creativity, and brilliance touched everyone who knew him. His music, his art, and his light deserved the world’s stage.

Today we honor him in the way he always deserved to be honored — celebrated among the visionaries, creators, and leaders of tomorrow.

A gifted creator, visionary, and son and a brother gone too soon — but his light will never fade.
