These two classes qualify competitors to compete in the 2027 World Ploughing Contest in Kenya!
Any two or three bottom moldboard plow is eligible for these classes. Rules restrict the size of the tailpiece, and no other attachments may manipulate the turned furrow. You’ll commonly see plows manufactured specifically for contest plowing from Kverneland, Kongskilde, and Fiskars.
The Small Plow Class plows a typical plot starting with an opening split: a shallow round throwing the soil “out” creating a strip two furrows wide that has been cut by the plow. After judges assess the split, the crown is then placed on top of the split. The Small Plow Class plows a plot: 65.5 ft (20 m) wide by 328 ft (100m) long, within a 3 hour time limit.
The Reversible Class plows a triangular shaped plot: 100 meters long, 24 meters wide on one end, and 16 meters on the other end. The competitor plows an 8 or 9 furrow crown. Then he plows the “butts” against his neighbor’s crown, lifting his plow at a scratch mark he himself created. Once the “butts” are finished, the competitor plows the connecting furrow and finishing furrows which are parallel to his own crown. Lots of measuring and careful driving ensure the final furrow ends up right next to and parallel with the crown!
