What’s at stake for Anoka families on Monday night -
On Monday, April 20, the Anoka City Council will hold the second reading of a new charitable gambling ordinance. If it passes as written, AAHA and every other Anoka organization that runs lawful gambling, including Anoka Ice Arena, the American Legion, and ARAA, will be required to contribute 10% of our net profits to a city administered fund where those dollars would be distributed by the city.
That means dollars that currently go directly into local programs would instead be pooled and redistributed through a city managed process.
Most of you who have been part of AAHA have already seen where those dollars go:
• Ice time that keeps a season affordable for families
• Full sets of equipment for first year players through programs like Mini Cyclones and Try Hockey for Free
• Scholarships for players who need financial assistance to play
• Learn to Skate and youth programs, the entry point into the game for many of our current players
• Academic All Stars, recognizing and supporting players who excel in the classroom
Charitable gambling is how we fund these programs. A 10% reduction directly impacts what we can put toward ice time, scholarships, and equipment and ultimately affects the cost for families.
The ordinance already requires that at least half of our spending stays in Anoka and surrounding communities. We already do that today and will continue to do so.
We need the community’s help.
The ask on Monday: Show up for Anoka.
• Email the Mayor and City Council before Monday: [email protected]
• Attend the meeting: Monday, April 20 at 7:00 PM at Anoka City Hall Council Chambers, 2015 First Avenue
• Wear your AAHA gear so the council sees who is there
• Speak during the ordinance discussion and share what AAHA means to your family
• Not comfortable speaking? Share your name and how long you have been part of AAHA
• Cannot attend? Watch live on QCTV Channel 16 or qctv.org/anoka
• Share this with others in the community
AAHA’s charitable gambling is how we keep hockey affordable for Anoka families. Monday night, we are asking the city to let us keep doing that.
