🤝 Building Collaborative Pathways for Youth & Families 💙

The Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center is grateful to have welcomed Monica Roland, Proposal Development Administrator with Youth Services Institute; Jessica Smith, Director of Community Engagement with United Way of East Central Alabama; and Jasmine Whatley, Youth Development Specialist with UWECA’s RISE Initiative, for an important conversation about strengthening collaborative services for children and youth experiencing problematic sexual behaviors (PSB).

Through UWECA’s RISE Initiative, Jasmine is currently undergoing supervision to provide PSB-CBT—an evidence-based treatment approach designed to support youth who have engaged in problematic sexual behavior by developing healthy boundaries, strengthening emotional regulation and coping skills, increasing accountability, and supporting healthier relationships and behaviors.

At the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center, we know that supporting children and families impacted by abuse and problematic sexual behaviors requires more than one agency or one professional. It takes a multidisciplinary, trauma-informed, and community-based approach where professionals can work together to identify needs, connect families to appropriate services, and create pathways toward healing and healthy development.

We are excited to develop a partnership focused on referrals, education, collaboration, and coordinated support for youth and families in our community. We are especially pleased to welcome United Way of East Central Alabama’s RISE Initiative and the University of Alabama’s Youth Services Institute into our multidisciplinary network as partners in providing education, support, advocacy, and specialized resources for this important population we serve.

When organizations come together with a shared commitment to children and families, we can expand the resources available to our community and help ensure that youth receive appropriate, evidence-based support while families are met with compassion, accountability, and hope.

We look forward to continuing these conversations, strengthening our partnerships, and building a more connected continuum of care for the children, youth, and families of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties. We are grateful for our continued partnership with UWECA and all that we are able to achieve! 💙

As we come to a close on September, we want to take a moment to recognize National Su***de Prevention Month and Recovery Month. 💙💚

September is recognized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as a time to raise awareness, spread hope, reduce stigma, and spark meaningful action surrounding su***de prevention and mental health.

Su***de is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 10–34, and more than 48,000 people die by su***de each year in the United States. Knowing the warning signs can help us recognize when someone may need additional support. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health or su***de crisis, call or text 988 to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

You are worth loving. You are not a burden. Your life is worth living. The world is a better place with you in it. You have what it takes to make it through anything. You are not alone. You are enough. You matter. 💚

September is also Recovery Month, a time to celebrate recovery, highlight the effectiveness of treatment, and recognize the strength it takes to seek support. Recovery is a process of change through which individuals work to improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and reach their full potential. Millions of Americans are in recovery, and treatment works.

At the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center, we see the power of healing and recovery in the children and families we serve every day. As we reflect on this month, our Therapist, Morgan, wanted to share the words of a child who recently completed therapy at our Center.

When asked what they learned during their time in therapy, this child shared that they learned:

💙 New coping skills
💙 To practice deep breathing when they feel angry
💙 Ways to feel happier
💙 Tools to help when they feel sad
💙 That they are capable of being okay and trying new things
💙 That therapy is good and can help with a lot of things

And when asked what they would tell their future self if things ever became difficult, their answer was simple: “You got this.”

Sometimes, healing does not look like having all the answers. Sometimes, it looks like learning one new coping skill, taking a deep breath, trying something new, asking for help, or reminding yourself that difficult moments will not last forever.

This child’s reflection is a beautiful reminder of the strength, resilience, and capacity for growth that children possess. Therapy is not a sign of weakness, and asking for help does not mean something is wrong with you. Seeking support is a courageous step toward healing.

As we close out September, may we continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking, celebrate recovery, and remind the children and families in our community that hope is possible.

To every child, teen, or adult who is learning how to cope, heal, grow, and believe in themselves: you’ve got this. 💙

📚 Learning, connecting, and advocating for stronger futures. 💙

We are grateful for another incredible educational and networking opportunity for the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center! Today, our Clinical Director, Morgan, attended the Alabama Children’s Policy Council Conference in Montgomery, alongside fellow Calhoun County Council members. In addition, our Governor, legislators, judges, teachers, mental health professionals, and more attended.

This conference provided an invaluable opportunity to learn more about changes happening within state-level departments that impact children and families, hear from incredible keynote speakers, and connect with professionals from across Alabama who share a common commitment: serving children and families and advocating for meaningful change.

The Alabama Children’s Policy Council (CPC) is designed to support providers of children’s services as they work collaboratively to develop community service plans addressing the needs of children ages 0–19 and their families. Local CPCs allow the unique needs of each community to be identified and addressed, while those local needs help inform and shape children’s policies at the state level.

As a Children’s Advocacy Center serving Calhoun and Cleburne Counties, our involvement with the Council is an important part of advocating for the children and families in our communities. We are proud to bring our experiences, perspectives, and the voices of the children and families we serve to these conversations.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside such a dedicated group of professionals from across our state who continue to come together around one shared mission: building resilience and strengthening futures for Alabama’s children and families. 💙

What a wonderful day at the Out of the Shadows Summit! 💙

The Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center is so grateful to everyone who stopped by our vendor table today, took the time to learn more about what we do, and connected with our team. We were especially thankful to those who joined our Clinical Director for her breakout session on multidisciplinary collaboration and explored ways we can strengthen communication, connection, and collaboration across disciplines to better support children and families.

Today was filled with learning, networking, meaningful conversations, and opportunities to grow alongside professionals who share our commitment to serving children after trauma. We are incredibly grateful to the Out of the Shadows Summit planning committee for selecting our presentation and for making our first major conference experience as both a vendor and speaker such a welcoming and seamless one.

Thank you to everyone who helped make today so meaningful. We are leaving inspired, encouraged, and Stronger Together. 💙

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of an icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton. 💔

Through her incredible initiatives, many children right here in Calhoun and Cleburne counties have been impacted by her commitment to children and early childhood development. United Way of East Central Alabama partners with the Dollywood Foundation’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, allowing parents and caregivers to share the joy of reading with their children while creating opportunities for early childhood development.

Through this program, children from birth to five years old receive an age-appropriate book each month—completely free to the child and family. The program is available to children ages birth–5 who live in Calhoun, Cleburne, or Randolph County.

Dolly was a true champion for children. Her commitment to putting children first and investing in their futures should be recognized and remembered. Her impact reminds us of what is possible when we choose to put children first. ❤️📚

Thank you, Dolly, for helping children dream, learn, and grow through the simple but powerful gift of a book right here in Calhoun and Cleburne County!

Rest in peace, Dolly. Your legacy will continue through the lives you touched. 🦋✨

We’re honored to be featured on this week’s episode of Calhoun County’s Most Wanted! Our Clinical Director, Morgan Schaffer, joined Sheriff Hurst and Ashley Morrison, Public Information Officer, to share this week’s lineup and to briefly discuss the partnership between our Center and law enforcement. 💙

The Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center is proud to work alongside the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and other local law-enforcement partners to support children and families and seek justice. We are especially grateful for Sheriff Hurst’s service on our Board of Directors and for the incredible partnership we share with law enforcement in our community. Together, we are stronger in protecting children and serving families. 💙

Last week, our Clinical Director, Morgan Schaffer, attended the Alabama Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers’ Directors Conference! 💙

The conference provided an opportunity to hear insights from CAC Directors across Alabama, as well as gain valuable information from the Southern Regional Children’s Advocacy Center. We are grateful to ANCAC for their continued support, leadership, technical assistance, and expertise. Continuing education, training, and networking are crucial to the work we do, and we are so pleased Morgan could attend and bring back valuable knowledge to inform and strengthen our work at the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center!
