3) Understand the differences in crisis intervention techniques and counseling/therapy techniques.
4) Learn when crisis intervention is appropriate and when referral for counseling is indicated.

Presentation Overview:

The role of the Human Resource Professional can be irreplaceable in the success of a business. Some important aspects of this role include:
1) Acting as a conduit for conveying the long and short range goals of the organization,
2) Advocating for employee involvement in all areas of the business,
3) Championing good communication between employees, supervisory personnel, and upper management, and
4) Providing incentives and information to build trust within the organization.

Human Resource Management should provide for physical safety and health, offer opportunities for mental/emotional growth and health plus honor the spiritual needs of employees with policies and programs designed to protect and nurture the human resource.

It has been a recent development in more and more organizations to provide employee assistance and mental health services to employees. It is an important task for the HR Professional to understand the needs of employees in this vital area and to develop prevention and early intervention strategies and referral processes that marshal local resources toward meeting this need.

This presentation is designed to offer insight into this undertaking and encourage HR Professionals to think and act proactively in this arena.

Date: July 11, 2023, 7:30 AM
Time: 7:30 – 9:00 AM
Location: Chamber of Commerce, 1330 Quintard Ave, Anniston, AL 36201
Speaker: Al Vreeland, founding member of Lehr Middlebrooks, Vreeland & Thompson

Topic: Employment Law Update
Summary: Al Vreeland’s presentation will cover recent developments including the Pregnant Workers Employment Act, affirmative action, religious accommodation, and other EEO trends, as well as recent activity by the NLRB.

Bio: Al Vreeland is a founding member of the firm. Al has represented employers in the entire range of employment litigation. His cases have ranged from the claims of a single disgruntled employee to statewide, regional, and nationwide attacks on his clients’ hiring, promotion, termination, pay and benefits practices. In addition to traditional employment and benefits claims, Al’s litigation practice includes cases involving unfair competition, breach of contract, trade secret misappropriation, and other issues involving incoming and departing employees. Al has defended clients across the country in courts from the Northeast (New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) to the Midwest (Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati) to the West (Denver and San Diego) and, of course, throughout the Southeast (Nashville, New Orleans, Atlanta and Orlando).
In addition to his litigation practice, Al regularly counsels clients on preventive employment measures and on handling risk-laden employment decisions. His counseling practice has an emphasis on issues of corporate restructuring, such as sales, acquisitions and reductions-in-force. Al works with clients to analyze the risks of proposed corporate changes, including the risk of union accretion, employee benefit liability, WARN obligations, and adverse EEO impact.
Al is a frequent speaker and writer on issues of employment law. For more than thirty years, he has been the editor of the Southeast Employment Law Letter (formerly the Alabama Employment Law Letter) and a contributing editor of the Alabama Employer’s Desk Manual. His published works include “Internal Investigations” in HR Guide to Employment Law: A Practical Compliance Reference (BLR, 2013), How to Conduct Internal Investigations, (M. Lee Smith Publishers, 1999) and “The Breath of the Unfee’d Lawyer,” 90 U. Mich. L.R. 626 (1991). Al is also an active member of the Wage & Hour Defense Institute and the Employers Counsel Network.
