A PLACE FOR WOMEN TO CALL HOME
Women and men use drugs for different reasons, in different ways, experience addiction differently, and even relapse for different reasons. So it’s no surprise that men and women also face different obstacles in early recovery as well.
In the early stages of treatment, many women worry that their family won’t be able to function without them, or that they’ll lose custody of their children. Many women also believe that their addiction is simply a social habit or that it’s purely a result of anxiety, mental stress, or depression, instead of acknowledging the addiction as a problem on its own. Fear of shame and financial concerns are also some of the top reasons women struggle to get help for substance abuse problems.
Women enrolled in a transitional housing program are less likely to relapse because they have access to a number of recovery support services, meaningful relationships with peers and sponsors, and a heavy amount of structure in their lives. Women are actually less likely than men to relapse, in part because they tend to participate in group counseling more.
Mary’s Lamb was conceived and built with women in mind. Give us a call to see how we can help. Call us at 410-255-4342 or visit https://zcu.io/pxzS and start your journey to recovery.

WOMEN AND ADDICTION
While addiction to alcohol and other drugs is an equal-opportunity disease, women are affected differently than men. Generally speaking, women progress faster in addiction than men, face different barriers to getting help, and recover differently. Recognizing these differences can be critical in identifying addiction and determining the most effective treatment options.
The stigma attached to addiction can be stronger for women—mothers, in particular—than men. Denial, fear, and shame prevent women from looking honestly at their drinking and drug use, and from asking friends or family for help or consulting a professional. Other common barriers to help for women include child care responsibilities, lower wages/less income, substance abuse by a partner or other family members, fear of losing custody of children, lack of access to resources, or feeling unworthy of help.
Recovery is a natural for women and often happens fast. That's because women are wired for relationships, and recovery from addiction starts with connection. The female brain is very different from the male brain, and it starts in utero with the communication centers being different. Women are wired for connection and many women take their worth from the quality of their relationship. Women lose themselves and their most important relationships to addiction. Much of the healing process of recovery revolves around connecting with others who share the struggle.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR WOMEN WITH CHILDREN
Mary’s Lamb is a partner-program with Opportunity Ministries that provides supportive transitional housing for women who are successfully recovering from a substance use disorder and who have children or are pregnant and have no stable housing.
We offer supportive assistance and resources to both women and their children independently while simultaneously nurturing the family bond and creating a healthy relationship between the two. Our aim is to help women be empowered, educated, independent, productive, and valued members of society, as well as help children feel safe, loved, supported and nurtured.
Mary’s Lamb provides an integrated approach to stability and family by focusing on five major areas: education, employment, continued abstinence support, life skills, and family preservation.

TREATMENT GEARED SPECIFICALLY FOR WOMEN
There is no doubt that the rate of addiction is higher in men than women. Yet, an increasing number of women are suffering from substance use disorders and the gap between the s*xes is gradually closing. Millions of adult American females use street drugs, misuse prescription medications, or require treatment for excessive alcohol use.The treatment approach for females with substance use disorders is different due to s*x and gender differences. With some drugs, women progress more rapidly than men from first use to full-blown addiction. In addition, females experience more severe withdrawal symptoms and have a different response to treatments. For example, ni****ne replacement patches or gum are not as effective in females as they are in males.
Many women are afraid or embarrassed to seek treatment for substance abuse due to the social stigma or fear of legal repercussions. It is not uncommon for women to avoid addiction treatment due to lack of availability of childcare or help with home and family responsibilities.
Drug rehab programs for women address their unique needs such as providing parenting classes or childcare. The staff at Mary’s Lamb is trained and sensitive to a female addict’s issues. We provide physical, emotional, and social support. We have the experience and facilities to help.

UNEXPECTED BENEFITS OF ADDICTION RECOVERY

You’ll look better.
Brighter eyes, shinier hair, clearer skin and a healthier glow are just a few of the positive changes you might notice as your body begins recovery.
You’ll develop lasting friendships.
Addiction is a lonely disease and you’ve likely lost friends along the road. You’ll learn what it feels like to have real, lasting friendships once you’re in recovery.
You’ll have more time to find your passions.
The time you once spent using, seeking or thinking about drugs or alcohol can now be used to find your passions and feel energized about life.
You’ll feel good about yourself.
During recovery you’ll learn to believe in yourself and your ability to reach big and small recovery goals. And you deserve to have confidence – you’ve come along way in your hard-won sobriety.
Mental Clarity & Improved Memory
Rather than living in a cloudy haze that makes it difficult to remember things like birthdays, your work schedule or appointments, you’ll have the mental clarity to remember these things and be there for the people and obligations in your life. Being dependable and someone people can turn to and trust, is a wonderful feeling.
More Money
Once sober, saving money is a lot easier. Regardless of your income, you won’t be blowing it on overpriced cocktails, co***ne or craft beer. Instead, you’ll have more money to do other healthy, things like treating yourself and a friend to a nice dinner, going on a trip or getting a gym membership. Making ends meet is a lot easier when you’re sober.

WOMEN IN RECOVERY...
face unique barriers and distinctive issues from their male counterparts. This is a result of both s*x differences (e.g. biological differences between male and female bodies) and gender differences (e.g. societal or culturally constructed roles of masculinity and femininity).
Biologically, substance use disorder in women progresses at a faster rate than men, and are more susceptible to craving and relapse. Physiological differences accelerate the progression of addiction, as women metabolize alcohol and drugs differently. Fewer stomach enzymes and more fatty tissue slow down the processing of alcohol and other drugs, causing the body to be exposed to higher concentrations of the substance longer.
Culturally, women have often experienced greater levels of stigmatization around substance use as a result of their traditional societal roles as gatekeepers, mothers, caregivers, and often the central organizing factor in their family units. Women have also begun consuming alcohol at intensities and frequencies that are quickly catching up to that of their male counterparts.
Women suffering from substance use disorder will have unique experiences and challenges, displaying different issues and needs that may be essential to address in order for them to achieve and maintain long-term recovery.
