The Annapolis Christ Child Society is a non profit chapter of the National Christ Child Society. The history of the Christ Child Society began Washington D.C.

Our mission is to serve children in the Annapolis area who are in need. in 1887 with an extraordinary woman, Mary Virginia Merrick. She gathered family and friends with an idea to serve one newborn in need. This idea became her lifelong mission and has grown to over 5,500 members, in 45 cities and has helped thousands of children. Since our founding, volunteers have been driven by faith, love and a desire to make a difference. Guided by National’s Challenging Poverty Initiative, we create localized programs or partner with others to build better communities. Today, Nationwide, over 5,500 members from 45 chapters volunteer nearly 400,000 hours and serve more than 75,000 children and their families annually.

It's time for the summer mailing to our supporters. Here's what we've been up to over the past year.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Our Christmas Project partnered with sponsors and local area health departments to provide gifts, winter coats, clothing and basic essentials to 435 children. The smiles and “thank yous” were heartwarming.
LITERACY COMMITTEE ACHIEVEMENTS
Over the past year, The Literacy Committee provided 2000 story and sketch books to 60 elementary schools where children had limited access to books of their own. We received such positive feedback and appreciation from teachers who expressed the engagement and delight from the children upon learning they had books they could take home!
LAYETTE COMMITTEE SERVICE
The Layette Committee is modeled on the original charge of the Christ Child Society in 1923, providing layettes to infants in need. In 2025, we distributed 180 layettes which included blankets, diapers, and other necessities to newborns in Anne Arundel County.
OTHER COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
In addition to our signature projects, we supported several community organizations over the past year. Donations were made to the Wellspring, Chrysalis House, Birthright and the Blue Ribbon Project, furthering our commitment to assist children facing challenges in Anne Arundel County. These contributions enabled us to extend our reach and provide valuable resources beyond our own programs.

The Red Wagon is often seen in correspondence, information and promotion of the Christ Child Society but do you know it's story?

During the Christmas season in 1884, Mary Virginia Merrick asked a little boy named Paul what he wanted for Christmas. Paul replied that he wanted a red wagon, but that there would be no Christmas at his house because his father had lost his job. Miss Mary suggested that Paul write a letter to the Christ Child and ask for the red wagon. Paul returned to Miss Mary with a handful of letters written by his siblings and playmates. Miss Mary gathered her friends and together they filled all the children's Christmas requests and attached tags that read "From the Christ Child." With these first gifts and the dedication to improve the lives of children in need, the Christ Child Society was born.

In the spirit of Mary Virginia Merrick and the giving embodied by the Red Wagon we endeavor to continue this wonderful tradition.

It was a beautiful day for deliveries! Carol and Nancy visited Wellspring, Chrysalis House, Inc., and Birthright with donations from the Annapolis Christ Child Society. We are happy to partner with our Anne Arundel County neighbors, providing for those in need.

Anne Arundel County Elementary school students enjoying "The Great Kapok Tree," and the accompanying Sketch Books. The Literacy Committee delivered
2,000 books and sketchbooks to third graders in 60 schools. Their teachers report that the children were so appreciative and excited to learn the books were theirs to keep!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for the Annapolis Christ Child Society! Through the incredible generosity of our sponsors we were able to provide winter clothing and Christmas gifts for 412 Anne Arundel County children. We wish to thank our individuals supporters, St. Mary’s Elementary School, St. Joseph’s Parish and Weems Creek Nursery School for their generous donations. A special shout out to the McHale family and McHale Landscaping for transporting the packages to our local health departments. 🎄
From the months of planning, logistics, wrapping and delivery we are blessed to do this project each year.
In the true spirit of the Christ Child we wish you and yours a wonderful new year.

The Christ Child Society of Annapolis is pleased to support local area Elementary Schools with the gift of reading and creativity. We donated 2000 books - The Great Kapok Tree and 2000 Sketch Books to Anne Arundel County 3rd Graders. We love the smiling faces! 😃 Thank you Literacy Committee!
