Reflex Improv brings people together through live improvisational theater, classes, and workshops that prove creativity, connection, and laughter are skills anyone can develop.
Q: Do you have to be “funny” to do improv, or is that a myth?
“I think just about everyone is funny and improv can uncover that hidden skill. I’ve had more than a few students come into the first class and say ‘I’m not funny’ and they turn out to be one of our funniest players. One of the biggest myths is that you have to be outgoing with big bold characters. Some of our best and funniest improvisers are introverts.”
Q: What does “yes, and” actually mean beyond the stage?
“’Yes, and’ really means, ‘I’ve heard you and I’m going to honor what you’ve said by agreeing with it, and then adding my own piece, and I’m trusting that you will do the same back.’ It’s a very effective communication tool because it requires listening and empathy.”
Q: Why do you think improv belongs in a creative community like Annapolis?
“It literally creates community. It breaks down barriers. It’s also much easier for people to work together after they have laughed together.”
At its heart, improv is about more than comedy. It’s about listening, trust, collaboration, and creating something together in real time.
