The first ribbon cutting for the Whole Watershed Program established by Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth in 2024. Two bioretention cells were installed at the Giant on Bay Ridge Rd to treat stormwater runoff before entering Back Creek. In addition to Congresswoman Elfreth, SRA Executive Director Jesse Iliff, Delegate Dylan Behler, Secretary of Maryland Department of Natural Resources Josh Kurtz, and Alderman Frank Thorp spoke about the importance of this project. We are happy to start the cascade of projects that will be accomplished through the Whole Watershed Program.

The last few weeks have shown great water clarity, measuring over 1 meter at all of our stations! However, with all of the rain over memorial day weekend, clarity scores across the river have gone down due to sediment runoff.

This year we added new monitoring metrics to start tracking chlorophyll, phosphorus, and nitrogen.As you can see in the picture with the circle filters, more algae and sediment were present at Indian landing near the headwaters of the Severn than Round Bay, which has more mixing.

With storms also brings trash. Restoration Associate Mollie and summer intern Keira found all of this trash within an hour on the river!
