Spa Creek Conservancy The goal of Spa Creek Conservancy is to bring awareness to the watershed and make the creek clean enough to safely swim and fish in again.

The Spa Creek Conservancy is a volunteer organization dedicated to the stewardship of the Spa Creek watershed through education, preservation, mitigation, and restoration. The Spa Creek watershed spans historic downtown Annapolis, Eastport, and the surrounding areas. The headwaters run through Truxtun Park and eventually open into the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River. Spa Creek provides recreational opportunities for thousands of boaters, fishermen, and hikers each year and provides habitat for many of the Chesapeake Bay's native wildlife.

THE CITY OF ANNAPOLIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, at 145 Gorman St., Annapolis, MD 21401 has applied to
1) Remove an existing pier;
2) Construct a 202-foot long by 8-foot wide fixed timber pier with a 5-foot by 7-foot fixed platform, a 24-foot long by 6-foot wide fixed timber ramp, a 5-foot by 6-foot fixed platform, a 18-foot long by 5-foot wide gangway, and a 30-foot by 20-foot floating platform, all within a maximum of 151 feet channelward of the mean high water line;
3) Construct an 155-linear foot low profile stone and coir log, sand containment sill; and fill and grade with 59 cubic yards of sand along 175 feet of eroding shoreline and plant with approximately 1,913 square feet of high marsh vegetation and 1,094 square feet of low marsh vegetation extending a maximum of 40 feet channelward of the mean
high water line;
4) Construct a 21-foot long by 10-foot wide cobble outfall that drains upland stormwater into open water tidal wetlands within a maximum of 45 feet channelward of the mean high water line; and,
5) Mechanically dredge a 13,334 square foot irregularly shaped area to a depth of 4 feet at mean low water; and to deposit approximately 1,056 cubic yards of dredged material on an approved upland disposal site located at 4944 Sands Rd., Lothian, MD 20711; and
to provide for periodic maintenance dredging for six years. The proposed dredging will result in 11,018 square feet of
impacts to shallow water habitat, requiring mitigation.

The purpose of this project is to improve navigable access and

Hawkins Cove Under the Microscope:
MDE Environmental Hearing Tuesday, October 6
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has scheduled a public hearing on the next step in the long-awaited Hawkins Cove project: an Annapolis city application for water quality certification.

The project aims to control shoreline erosion, create vital natural habitat and improve navigable access within a neglected part of Spa Creek. Planned work includes:

· Channel dredging and installation of a living shoreline

· Replacement and extension of an existing pier

· Construction of two new fixed platforms and a timber boat ramp

Local stakeholders and state leaders are strongly rallying behind the initiative. The ECA has urged MDE to approve the project without further delay, noting that Hawkins Cove -- historically a natural water access point adjacent to the city's largest public housing community -- has been rendered unusable by decades of silt buildup and shoreline decline. Restoring the cove aligns directly with the Eastport Choice Neighborhood Initiative and the City’s Equitable Public Water Access Plan, extending the benefits of Annapolis’ maritime identity to a neighborhood long cut off from the water.

We’d love for you to join us for Bog Day on Sunday, October 4th, as we celebrate the unique and beautiful bogs of the Magothy River Greenway!

This is a great chance for neighbors, families, and nature lovers to come out, explore, and help care for this incredible local ecosystem.

Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Bog Cleanup at Noon)

What to Expect:

Guided Tours: Walk through and learn about the Magothy Greenway bogs.

Thanks to all of our partners who helped make Kids on the Creek happen. Eastport Yacht Club, and Capital SUP got kids out on the water. Fish seining and identification, the touch tank, and Critter Crafts taught kids about the Spa Creek environment while they were having fun. Thank you, thank you to everyone who helped.

A long-awaited project is happening before our eyes at St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Charles Carroll House. A living shoreline, designed by our friends at Biohabitats and completely funded by St. Mary's and the Redemptorist Order, is being constructed to stem the erosion of the slope into Spa Creek. This great project will not only protect the church property from sea level rise but will greatly enhance the health of the Creek by introducing shoreline plantings crucial for habitat restoration and protection as well as water quality in Spa Creek. And create an oyster reef at this historic site! Another huge win for our beautiful Creek thanks to the dogged efforts of the St. Mary's Environmental Committee headed by Pat Mulligan, DNR and the Redemptorist priests.
