This week brought two major developments for voting rights.

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais significantly weakens a key federal protection against discriminatory voting maps. At the same time, Maryland took an important step forward as Governor Wes Moore signed the Maryland Voting Rights Act of 2026 into law, strengthening protections against racial discrimination in state and local elections.

This victory in Maryland did not happen overnight. It reflects years of advocacy, coalition-building, and grassroots organizing by the League of Women Voters of Maryland and our partners.

Today also marks the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a reminder that expanding and protecting the freedom to vote has always required sustained civic engagement.

As we recognize this milestone, join us for Unite & Rise for Voting Rights on August 8, a nationwide day of action focused on voter education, engagement, and participation.

Learn more, get involved, and support voting rights at LWVMD.org and LWV.org.

The Maryland General Assembly is set to return for a Special Session on August 3rd. LWVMD is demanding that the Senate bring forth Special Elections for passage. This is a rare opportunity to fix a missed chance. Now is the time to empower voters, not keep them locked out.
