Upstream Alliance

Upstream Alliance Upstream Alliance provides on-water kayaking experiences, advocating for clean water & public access. New people are joining the field.

Forty-five years after the first Earth Day so many people that were passionate about saving the planet are leaving the service. Young people, filled with passion and energy, are looking to learn about how to make a difference in a world that can seem selfish and uncompromising. How can those with decades of experience pass on their mature networks and seasoned ideas to the next wave? For 38 years,

I fought to give Maryland schoolkids the chance to have experiential environmental education. Now, Iโ€™m interested in supporting those kids as they being their careers. Fresh college graduates are often at critical junctions. At Upstream Alliance, we are helping young professionals that are likely to become leaders. We will bring together these veteran and emerging leaders to explore the waters, investigate real issues, and share ideas: in short we let the magic happen. The way people see leadership is rapidly changing. Traditionally, leadership was associated with individual efforts. Yet this is an era characterized by complex problems which need coordinated systems to find solutions. Itโ€™s becoming clear that collaborative leadership is key to success. Building networks is essential. Upstream Alliance fills a niche thatโ€™s not currently present. Its unique strategy is to use the outdoor experiences as a platform for network building. No other program we are aware of combines both that expedition feel, which connects people passionately to nature and builds teams, along with the problem solving, mentoring, and collaborative skills that are needed to cultivate exceptional leaders and leadership networks.

The third annual Red Knot Fest was a great success!๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ€

Thanks to the Town Of Slaughter Beach and Memorial Volunteer Fire Co. we made use of the pavilion to host a wonderful day celebrating the incredible connection between red knots, horseshoe crabs, and the Delaware Bay.โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

With beautiful sunny weather, community members and beachgoers enjoyed birding tours, programs at the DuPont Nature Center, seining for fish, making fish printed bandannas and learning more about the important conservation work being done to protect these species and their habitats. We also enjoyed delicious tacos from Taqueria Martinez.

A huge thank you to all our partners volunteers and attendees who made the day possible. We loved celebrating with you and canโ€™t wait to see everyone again next year!๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŽฃ

Firefly updates incoming! โšก๏ธโš“๏ธ

Construction is moving full steam ahead, and Firefly is nearing completion. Weโ€™re excited to share that the US Coast Guard has approved Fireflyโ€™s fire suppression design, making it the first passenger-carrying vessel approved to use Lithionics lithium iron phosphate batteries, the safest lithium-ion chemistry, and a major step forward for electric propulsion.๐Ÿ”‹

Recent progress includes installation of the water-based fire suppression system, final wiring of the battery space and lifting platform, fresh non-skid paint on the deck, and prep work for antifouling paint on the hull. The waterproof monitor has also been installed, allowing us to visualize microscopic life, display data, and monitor, solar gain, proportion, and the battery management system in real time.๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ”ฌโ˜€๏ธ

We were also lucky to host a virtual tour of Firefly with Lance Buchanan, Boatbuilding Division Manager at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding . Click here to watch the virtual tour video to learn more about the innovative technology behind Firefly and how it will support hands-on environmental education on the water!๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ“š

UA had so much fun at ShadFest this past Sunday!๐ŸŸโ˜€๏ธ

UA had an incredible time getting hands-on with fish seining and fish t-shirt printing - watching kids light up as they identified, learned about local fish, and made art! ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽจ

It was also great to connect with so many organizations doing meaningful work along the river coming together to share their passion and knowledge with the community๐ŸŽ‰โœจ

A big thank you to for hosting and organizing and to our volunteers hard at work at the fish printing station๐Ÿ‘

See you next year!!
