Last week we had the pleasure of meeting Leslie Skibo, the recently installed Executive Director of the Assistance League of the Chesapeake.

Leslie described the organization's growth from 10 founding members 25 years ago to 90 volunteers today. The grant funded nonprofit serves Anne Arundel County through six community programs benefiting more than 1,000 children and adults each year. Its largest initiative, Kids in Need, provides free school uniforms to students at eight Title I schools.

Last year, volunteers distributed 3,200 uniforms, maintained emergency clothing closets, and supplied nearly 1,000 pairs of hats and gloves.

Other programs include weekend food backpacks for food-insecure children, baby supplies for families through the Annapolis Family Support Center, literacy programs that provide books and reading mentors, sing-alongs and greeting cards for assisted living residents, and an anti-bullying puppet program for elementary schools.

During the past year, the League's 90 members contributed approximately 4,500 volunteer hours.

In the Q&A, Skibo noted that a complete school uniform costs about $75, donations can be made online, membership is open to anyone under the bylaws, and the organization relies primarily on grants to fund its charitable programs.
