The Chesapeake Bay just earned its best grade ever. 🎉🦀

UMCES’s 2026 Chesapeake Bay & Watershed Report Card gave the bay a C+ (56%), the highest score on record since the report began in 2006. The lower bay even earned a B+, the best any region has ever scored. A C+ certainly isn’t the finish line. But the bay is responding, and that’s proof efforts toward clean water matter. 🐟💧

So what actually is an estuary? 🌊🦪🐟 This National Estuaries Week, we’re reminding everyone what makes estuaries special. From providing nursery habitat, to filtering pollution, to supporting our fisheries and local economies, estuaries do a lot for us. That’s why protecting the rivers and streams that flow into them is so important.

It has been…interesting.

The news cycle has not been good to us these past few weeks. From the missing osprey and the weakening of the Endangered Species Act, to the repeal of the 2009 Chesapeake Bay Executive Order and the removal of climate protections, it’s been a lot.

While the news can get us down, we know there is work to be done and we remain strong and committed to moving this work forward.

After almost two years of discussions, the Indigenous Conservation Council (ICC), which represents the seven federally recognized tribes in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, will withdraw from formal engagement with the Chesapeake Bay Program.

"The Choose Clean Water Coalition stands with the Indigenous Conservation Council and the tribes it represents. We respect their decision to determine how and when they engage with the Chesapeake Bay Program, and we recognize that meaningful partnership must be built on trust, respect for tribal sovereignty, and a commitment to shared decision-making."
