Before oysters can help filter our waterways, build habitat, or support the bay’s aquaculture industry, they have to start small…

Our team had the chance to tour Piney Point Aquaculture Center on the second stop of our oyster tour. Here adult oysters are carefully selected to produce the next generation with conditions closely monitored to mimic natural spawning. Once the larvae hatch, tiny pieces of oyster shell are introduced for them to attach to. This marks their transition to juvenile oysters (aka spat)!

As they grow, the tiny oysters eventually move to the nursery, where they begin feeding on naturally occurring phytoplankton. And soon enough, they’re ready to tackle our waterways! 🦪 🌊

It all flows downstream!

In June, the Choose Clean Water Coalition staff traveled with Coalition members Ducks Unlimited, Chesapeake Conservancy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, PennFuture and Trout Unlimited to Centre County Pennsylvania to meet with Congressman GT Thompson.

During our visit in the Congressman’s district, we visited three family farms in the spruce creek watershed that have utilized EPA Chesapeake Bay Program funding for projects that reduce runoff and clean their local waterways. From stream exclusion fencing, to retrofitted barns, to wetlands and pollinator habitat, the projects all help clean and protect our water in local communities and downstream.

To learn more about the funding and programs that make these projects possible, visit choosecleanwater.org.

Osprey are a well-loved critter here in the Chesapeake watershed. Their annual journey to our waterways to meet their mate and lay their eggs is often marked on calendars across the region. But over the last several years these feathered friends have seen a significant decline in successful hatchlings and fledgings from their nests. Meaning, eggs are not hatching and baby birds are not surviving long enough to leave the nest. These warning signs are indicators that something is off balance in our ecosystem and we must listen. to

Last month, the Coalition staff and a group of our supporters ventured to Patuxent River Park to get an up-close look at the ospreys that call it home and learn about the challenges they are facing.
