SPCA of Anne Arundel County The SPCA of Anne Arundel County provides humane care and adoption services for homeless animals in central Maryland. In 1934 civic leader Albert H.
(875)

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County was founded in 1920. Originally a society created to deal with the problem of stray dogs overwhelming the Eastport section of Annapolis, the SPCA has grown through the years to become the modern animal welfare organization of today. McCarthyAlbert H. McCarthy was asked by the community to take over the presidency of the struggling, young organization. A strong force

for animal welfare, he laid the foundations for the SPCA that were to see it through the decades ahead. The SPCA handled dog licensing and enforcement from 1936 to 1966, operating a fleet of up to six ambulances that were dispatched throughout the county to retrieve injured animals. The first shelter building opened in 1947. The shelter in 1947It now houses our administrative offices, the spay and neuter clinic, and meeting spaces for activities such as volunteer orientation and dog obedience classes. In 1966 the county animal control division was established. Today Animal Control responds to calls in the county and picks up stray animals as well as investigating cruelty complaints. The SPCA takes in all voluntarily surrendered animals, providing shelter, medical care and adoption services. In 1974 the SPCA became one of the pioneers for low cost spay and neuter services. Peg Howard, a singular volunteer, donor, and board member, built and equipped our first spay and neuter clinic with her own money, making an extraordinary gift to the SPCA and the community. The current animal shelter, the Mary E. Parker Shelter, opened in 1986. Very modern for its time, the new shelter provided air conditioning, flexible runs, medical isolation rooms, and other updated facilities. Today the SPCA is a vibrant animal welfare organization. With our new online adoption application, starting the adoption process is easier than ever!

Adoptable Baaghi wants to know if anyone out there wants to add a big, beautiful, tennis-ball loving, Hound into their lives? 🎾🐾

Baaghi is a gorgeous 5 year old Bluetick Coonhound weighing in at almost 80lbs. Baaghi came to us because his former family had to move away and sadly couldn’t bring him along. They shared that he loves playing two-ball fetch with tennis balls and enjoys snuggling up in his blanket and fluffy beds. He loves attention from people and will pull out the best puppy-dog eyes you’ve ever seen in order to get you to throw his ball for him 🎾

He is very good on-leash but can pull at times due to his hound-like quirks and constantly catching and following ALL the smells! Baaghi spends his walks with his nose to the ground following every scent and will even give you a bark as if to tell you what scent he’s following, he’s clearly a very smart guy!

👶🏼 Kids ages 12+
🐶 Currently unknown with dogs (meet and greets with other pets are always required for approved applicants!)
❌🐱 Not good with cats

Looking to add a silly Coonhound to your family? Apply today for Baaghi! 🤍

✨Today’s happy tale features Stella (formerly Angely). ✨

Stella recently joined her forever home and has made it clear she's a genuine love bug. Every time someone sits on the floor, she curls up on their lap. If that’s not sweet enough, she also wants to be as close to her new family members’ faces for kisses. At night, Stella hops into bed and cuddles with her new human family members. Currently, draping herself across someone’s neck is her favorite sleep/cuddle position. 💕

When she’s not snuggling up to a family member, she also loves cardboard scratchers and looking out the windows from the safety of her new home.

Stella’s family is taking introductions to her new cat siblings slowly to help all the animals acclimate to each other. So wise to set up all of them for success!

Thanks for adopting Stella and letting her live her best cat life! She is so fortunate to have such a loving family and home. We wish you lots of cuddles and joyful times ahead!

As temperatures start to rise, we are entering the seasons of longer walks and more active play sessions. With the help of adoptable Lilo and SPCA alums, Royale, Oreo and Money, we wanted to share some helpful tips on how to keep your pets safe during the hotter months. ☀️🐾

Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency caused by an elevated body temperature after prolonged exposure to hot or humid conditions, or strenuous exercise.

Did you know that while all dogs can experience heatstroke, short-muzzle breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, etc.) are at higher risk due to their decreased ability to cool themselves efficiently through panting?

Tips to help prevent heatstroke:
• Ensure your furry friends stay hydrated and always have access to fresh water, indoors and outdoors
• Whenever possible, provide access to shaded areas for rest during walks or outdoor recreation
• Limit high-intensity exercise to cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening
• Never leave animals unattended in vehicles, as cracking the windows is not enough to prevent dangerous temperatures
• An easy way to check pavement temperature is to place your bare hand on the ground for 7–10 seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your pet’s paws
• Opt for indoor playtime during periods of extreme heat

Signs of heatstroke can include:
• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Weakness or confusion
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Collapse or seizures

If you suspect heatstroke:
• Immediately move your pet indoors or into a shaded, cool area and offer cool (not ice-cold) water
• Applying cool water to your pet’s body and placing them near a fan may help lower their temperature
• Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately, especially if symptoms are severe or worsening

🌟⭐️🌟Milo (formerly Bandit) is the star of today’s happy tale.🌟⭐️🌟

His new family sent the sweetest update on his progress. They said,

“His new name is Milo and he is already learning it, along with sit, stay, and leave it, such a clever boy. We are also really impressed with how quickly he is understanding potty training. He goes in and out of his crate freely all day and has only barked a few times when we lock his door and go to bed (he settles down soon). He absolutely loves playing and exploring our backyard with his big brother Ollie. They are best buds already.

“Thank you again for everything you all did to give him such excellent care. We are so blessed to have such a sweet guy bring energy back into our lives.”

To Milo’s family, thank YOU for choosing to adoption. We are so delighted by all these updates and appreciate the photo of Milo and Otis. Yay for Milo and his happy tale! 🥰🐾

He’s settling beautifully and is enjoying life in his new home. In fact, things are going so well that his family is already dreaming about adopting again so he can have some feline siblings and playmates!

The photos say it all—Finnegan looks relaxed, content, and completely at home in his new surroundings. We love seeing and hearing that he’s thriving. Thank you for choosing adoption and for giving Finnegan the loving home he deserves! 🐱🩵

Willow River ain’t nothin but a hound dog 🎶

This 6 year old girl is truly the quintessential basset hound (i.e. very similar to a sour patch kid) a little sassy at times, but mostly sweet, very sniffy and vocal!

Willow River loves meeting new people and enjoys going for long, leisurely walks where she can thoroughly investigate all the smells and try not to trip over her ears. She is a little bit of a diva and thinks that instead of earning a treat by sitting, she should get a treat just for being her perfect little self, can you blame her though? She’s gorgeous!

She has lived with children and other dogs before and did very well with them! She would do best in a home with no cats 🏡

Looking to add a little hound dog to your life? Apply for Willow River today! 🤍

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads and grandpas out there! Today we want to highlight a “grandpa” of our own who’s looking for his forever home, Rocket Apollo 🚀🐾

Rocket is a wonderful senior citizen at 11.5 years old and has been with us here at the shelter for sometime now … we would really love to see him find the forever home soon so he can spend his golden years in a loving and safe home 🤍

We really do think Rocket would be an easy addition to a home! Don’t let that tough-looking exterior fool you, he is a mellow dude with a gentle soul and an XL sized heart to match his XL sized body. He happily greets anyone who comes into his kennel with a big smile, tag wags and excited tippy tappies. He may even give you a bark from sheer excitement to go for his daily walk. He leashes up easily, has great leash manners and walks at a leisurely pace. He also knows a variety of commands and will happily show them off for a treat! He has also been to a few of our events and has been very well-behaved in hectic public settings and will happily hang out as people walk by.

Rocket really is a super sweet boy, who would love to just chill at home with his favorite people during his senior years. He is house-broken and has proven to be very well behaved in a home environment. Rocket is great with kids of all ages and has shown to be very gentle and sweet with them. He would prefer to be the only pet in a home though, so he can have ALL the attention.

If Rocket seems like the perfect fit for you, apply today and come meet this big gentle boy in person!
