🚨 Public Comment Opportunity: Proposed OMB Changes to Federal Research Grant Regulations

A proposed rule from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) could significantly reshape how federally funded research is reviewed, funded, conducted, and communicated in the United States. The proposal includes expanded political oversight of grant funding decisions, new authority to terminate active awards, restrictions on international collaboration, and additional barriers to scientific exchange and publication.

USASP will submit comments on behalf of the Society, but our voice alone is not enough. Policymakers need to hear directly from researchers, clinicians, trainees, patient partners, caregivers, advocates, and community members whose work, lives, and futures may be affected by these proposed changes.

Even a brief comment written in your own words can make a meaningful difference.

📅 Public comments are due July 13, 2026.

Public comments on the proposed OMB rule (OMB-2026-0034) are due July 13 (11:59pm EDT). This proposal could significantly impact how federally funded research is reviewed, funded, conducted, and shared in the United States.

Dr. Gregory Maassen is currently riding an e-bike across the United States (Florida to California) to raise awareness for peripheral neuropathy!

As someone living with peripheral neuropathy, Greg turned to biking as a way to manage his symptoms and reclaim a sense of freedom. What started as a personal journey has become something much bigger: a cross-country effort to share his lived experience, connect with communities, and highlight the role of movement in healing.

This is his second ride across the U.S., and along the way he’s bringing together researchers, clinicians, and individuals with lived experience for meaningful conversations.

Learn more about his journey, watch the documentary about his tour, or learn more about peripheral neuropathy: https://ebiketour.org

Go GREG!
