August 17th is officially proclaimed National Nonprofit Day! Anne Arundel County
Today, we honor the staff, volunteers, and organizations serving our community every day. Tracing back to the federal Tariff Act of 1894—which first established tax-exempt status for charities—today celebrates over a century of mission-driven work.
Nonprofits are also a major part of our local economy. They employ 1 in every 10 Maryland workers, with 7% of the state’s nonprofits operating right here in Anne Arundel County.
From Brooklyn Park down to Deale, and Crofton over to Annapolis, our local nonprofits ensure no resident is left behind. When crisis hits, they step up as first responders—providing emergency shelter, food assistance, and mental health support.
To keep operations running on the ground, Anne Arundel County proudly supports this work through investments like $2 million in grants recently awarded to 69 local groups.
